Here’s our photos from Mother’s Wedding.
The camera was being passed around and it got switched into different modes. That led to some artsy blurry movement shots. When I got the camera back, I saw them in the viewfinder and decided to keep shooting like that. Some were really dark so I bumped the colors around in Photoshop.
I wish I had taken photos last night - at least one of David helping Grace on the big telescope - but we had too much going on.
The SSAC is having a holiday open house today (Sunday) from 1-5. It’s FREE — live music, craft activities for the kids, etc.
I’ll be playing cajun/zydeco with a trio from 2:30 to 5 — last minute fill-in gig with some folks I recently met.
Thanks Priests. Everything was awesome but the highlight, I think everyone will agree, were the three songs from Deirdre, Renee and Grace. That was the coolest.
There was a house full of a very interesting variety of people and songs…. and food. And the temperature outside was perfect. And the telescope was incredible. There were twice as many kids as usual and I noticed that they were all having a particularly great time.
Bonnie and David, your venue has been superbly christened as part of the hootenanny circuit.
When is the next one?
I’m home, I’m home, I ……..

Bonnie says we’re moving the Hoot back until 5:00. I think that’s better for everybody. Jimmie was planning with Bonnie last night and we’re going to set the P.A. up inside the house. But still bring warm clothes because it looks like perfect telescope skies. It’ll be chilly, but because we’re basing out of the house, we can come in and out. David says we’ll have a fire after the telescope goes back into it’s house. Yes, David’s telescope has it’s own house and very deservedly so.
Jimmie and I will be playing. Glenn and Kim got cancelled on Friday but picked up a last minute gig for tonight. He has a new CD to finance so we understand. We haven’t heard from everybody yet but… Karen’s coming, Richard Lewandowski’s coming, Deirdre, Renee and Grace have worked up a couple of songs, Bonnie and David’s friends are coming. We hope Lynne and Will will come. Taylor’s looking forward to singing even more Slaid Cleeves songs. Casey’s working her first day at Home Depot but she may drive out later - she wants to visit with Jaimie. Casey will sing. We’ll miss Glenn and Kim, but it’ll be a Hoot.
And, again, we’re running a special on Night Blooming Cereus cuttings. And pumkin pie (3) and dressing (two full pans).
We built our annual shanty town greenhouse yesterday and I have to cut back my big night blooming cactus to fit it in. I try to adopt out the clippings each year to people who want to start a plant. It’s really easy - you just stick the branches in a pot of potting soil and they root. You would need to keep them inside until spring but they are the easiest plant in the world to take care of. In the spring you just stick it out under a tree and it’ll grow like crazy.
Hillary got the clippings last year and her plant is beautiful.
I’m bringing a big bag full to the Pot Luck out at the Priests. Enough for as many people who want some.

I just ran across this CD deck that plays MP3s for $59. With free shipping.

Just writing to let you know about a radio special Third Coast will be running Sunday evening, Nov 30, at 6pm. It’s called “From Moonshine To Armadillos: Birth of the Austin Music Scene.” 2003 is
the 70th Anniversary of Threadgill’s in Austin. The special chronicles the start of the music scene at Threadgill’s up through the opening & closing of the Armadillo World Headquarters in the early 70’s. It includes interesting sound bites & musical cuts from that era in Austin. It runs from 6-7pm & then Rain will continue with his Third Coast shift until 10pm. If you were around those days in Austin & want to relive your wasted youth, please tune Sunday at 6pm.
Adios, Dave
This was the very first Thanksgiving dinner where Jimmie was completely in charge of buying, planning and cooking. I think it’s 1976. From the far right; Uncle Raymond sitting next to my empty chair, my brother Russell, my Grandmother and Grandfather, Aunt Jill, my Dad, my sister Renee, and that’s Jimmie’s back.
This was a big deal for Jimmie. I didn’t understand the underlaying reasons why at the time but I’m so glad that my Grandmother understood it. Just last night where was a real interesting conversation between Hillary and Casey about the transition from being a kid to being a meal provider. Thoughts from that after dinner conversation are still being digested. On the way home Casey was talking about trying to get some more one on one conversation time with Hillary because she enjoyed it so much. Some of the “finding your own way” lessons are best when they don’t come from your parents.
This photo is from that first time in our lives where Jimmie and I were really into photography. Her mom and dad bought her a professional Yashica 35mm SLR that was like a Mercedes Benz to us. Very finely crafted. Of course now if you ever see one it’s for a dollar at a garage sale. But it was the it for us and Jimmie really appreciated her parents getting it for her. For a little while we even rented a stall in a processing studio and did our own processing. This is a scan of one of the negatives we developed ourselves.

Sissy said that Cassell asked specifically for some photos of the day. We didn’t take many - sorry, too busy eating. I can’t believe we didn’t get a photo of Jack and Chandra boiling those turkeys in oil. But their little turkeys Winona Jo and Bailey were the stars of the show. We had to pry Bailey out of Jimmie’s arms at the end of the night.

That’s it. This post is just that Bonnie rocks.
And that we just got back from Mitch and Hillary’s and everything was great. And that we’re really looking forward to the get-ta-gether on Saturday.
David showed me how to Blog! That Holy Hoot note was my first time! I am a little nervous as I write this cuz this is all so new to me…but it is so exciting!
I may be off and rolling before I know it.
We are enjoying a fabulous, relaxing Thanksgiving, for which I am very greatful! La Madeline has provided our small feast, my brother from the nursing home is here, Ali decided to stay in jammies, Jaime is happy, The Two Towers DVD is playing on the tv, and Dave and I are loving just hanging out at home.
Hope you all are having a great Holiday as well!
Bonnie
Don’t really know how Holy it will be, but there will be Priest’s…
We are looking forward to this Hoot! Food theme is whatever sounds good to you…..soup, salad, dessert, veggies, appetizers, chips, dips, peanut butter & jelly, pizza….No Turkey….unless it is exotic….like curried or jerked or something! We will cook a big brisket (Priest oven style as opposed to the grilled variety). I figure whatever folks bring will be yummy…are we a picky group? Not!
Just an FYI, our terrain is not all smooth & level, so you might want “closed toe shoes” (as we say in Girl Scouts). also, bring your jackets!
Hoot! Hoot! Hoot! Hoot!
D & B
people better love these damn turkeys. Jack’s going to cook the two turkeys he’s bringing in a deep fryer. He’s sleeping right now.
and I’m putting the turkeys on the smoker. What was I thinking when I thought this was a good idea?
