Raymond knew we were planning the multi-family camping trip so he contributed two giant watermelons. This yellow one was so huge you could barely pick it up. Since the trip got postponed we’re having to eat them ourselves. We are having a total watermelon weekend. All watermelon, all the time.

    A fable

Kim is here at the house after playing at Riley’s. She sees a puppy, all dejected and ignored over next to the couch. She asks about it and we say we don’t play with the puppy anymore, the puppy won’t run. The boys say they don’t like puppies, they think kittens are better. Kim picks the puppy up and examines it’s “plumbing” and can tell just what kind of a puppy it is and how old. Then she lovingly takes the puppy home to nurse it back to health. Did I say puppy? I meant iMac.

Is there any way to have all the Whippleworld created music clips easily accessible - like in the sidebar or something?  Every now and then - or even more often - I need a little dose of Hoot.  I know this day would have gone much better if I could have just clicked on some of everyone’s beeyootifull music.  Can you techies work it out?

    Again with the no swimming

at McKinney State Park. Rumors circulating are true. Last year, at the last minute, it was that the water was too low. Now they’ve suspended swimming because it’s too high. This place is hard to get along with. Jimmie talked to Winona a little while ago and we don’t want to go if we can’t swim. It’s all about playing in the waterfalls. Winona’s telling her Mother and Harold and her friends. We had the bunkhouse reserved for Deirdre and crew and then Harold and his crew and Jonny and his family had reservations for the fancy improved campsites but they give you your money back so we can live to fight another day. We’re calling everybody now. Another idea might pop up, we’ll see. We pulled it out last year to a great result but we had more notice.

    Roots and Branches Trip Report

Casey and I went to the live radio broadcast last night. Walt Wilkins was the main attraction and he brought along two artists he’s produced. First up was Jamie Richards. Very traditional country sound with a great voice not unlike Randy Travis. The next performer was Sam Baker, and he just blew me away!

Really unique, poetic songs and an unusual vocal style. He doesn’t have a web site, but I bought his CD - it’s available at theLone Star Music store in Gruene.
Of course Walt was completely amazing. Sang all his best stuff, really connected with the small crowd.
I’m so glad I live in the heart of Texas!

Trying to hold on to summer

Calls itself “Learning HTML For Kids” but it’s a quick read and a good reference for anybody wondering how it works.

This is a genius design. If you know a fisherman, send him the link. I’m going to make one and my improvement will be that I’ll make it exactly 15 inches so you can quickly hold it against your trout to make sure it’s legal size. And Taylor has told family the story of hunting for Ghost Shrimp at the beach. They’re now making a commercial version of the pump that you suck them up out of the sand with. These things are down there under your butt when you’re sitting on the beach and you don’t even know it. I’m going to buy one for Taylor, he’s the absolute king of finding wild sea creatures at the beach.

Anyway, we picked up Taylor’s registration packet for High School. Nearing the end of summer. Nearing the end of his pre-high school life. Remember walking into High School that first day? Taylor’s going to have that day on Aug. 17th.

    Riley’s

Jimmie and I sang pretty darn good at Humble Time but we blew chunks at Riley’s. We gained just enough confidence to trip over. But Jimmie is very cool about laughing it off and we had a great night. There was a huge storm and the lights went out - they were out later at our house until the middle of the night. Anyway, it was really nice of Glenn and Kim to let us get up and do a set trying to work out some new songs. They didn’t even put their fingers in their ears. But their eyes were crossed and I could tell it was making their brains itch.

    Vindication!

Leslie, your baby sister’s got your back:

A recent article in the SA Current, “How to Clean Your Own Fish
Or, “Ugh, can’t we just buy one at Central Market?” By Santiago Hemingway” does advise that you “Rinse off your fish”….. of course, it does go on to say “preferably in cold, running tap water” - but I know you were doing your best big brother!

here is a new question. Name your favorite tv show and why. Mine is Rugrats because I grew up watching it and Case Closed just because its so awesome. And it has really good mystery stories.

    Whatcha doing this afternoon?

    Posted by: John

Why don’tcha drive up and watch the taping of Humble Time today at 2:00. They’re playing and Glenn suggested that we play also and I think we will. It’s Americana’s little Grand Ole Opera. Remember the hamburgers from Ol’ Bosey’s? If you weren’t alive in central Texas 40 years ago you probably don’t. But these burgers, and the Freiheit Country Store, are a trip back in time. There’s a map on the site and it’s easy, not far across I-35 from our house.

And, Glenn and Kim are playing Riley’s Tavern tomorrow from 4:00 to 8:00. Free Bar-B-Que for everybody. So think about coming and seeing them there. Maybe they’ll let Casey open for them. Susan Gibson is playing the River Pub from 7:30 to 10:00 so something that includes a late swim could be figured out there.

    I had Tortilla Soup, Today

John and I rode into SA together to run some errands and go by a big sale at a nursery on the west side. We’re loading 44 plants into the Suburban and a giant wind starts blowing leaves and dust everywhere. We barely get them in and it starts pouring! Now we’re hungry so we stop at Karam’s on Zarzamora to eat. It was really dark in there and John said the owners were probably trying to save money on their electric bill (he knows them), but the power was out. They managed to feed us anyway and it was all pretty fun.
Yummy soup (course I haven’t had any in months so I’m no judge).
I guess I’m going to start gardening again.
