    James McMurtry’s

new record is #1 on this week’s Americana chart. Merle Haggard’s up there, I heard he got sick so Delbert McClinton got the last minute call to open the Rolling Stones show last night in Dallas. Most people at a Rolling Stones show these days are over 40 so I bet he really knocked ‘em out. He’s so good. But you have to be old, you can’t be a poor kid and see a show . I guess it’s cause they’re in the Hall Of Fame. Like Delbert McClinton, Bruce Springsteen, Rodney Crowell, Merle Haggard; I bet the Rolling Stones won’t ever retire but’ll end up on Americana radio at 80 years old since no mainstream formats are ever going to play their new records again. Go back to their “Dead Flowers” and “Country Honk” sound. :)

was passed up again for The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. How lame. I heard this a couple of weeks ago on KUT Radio Austin’s podcast.

Jimmie has names for all the big oak trees out here and they love each other.

She will stop and hug them and make sure they’re o.k. She gets upset when storms have caused big branches to fall off. This one is “Sparky” because it was almost split in two by lightning. The light was very nice and Jimmie was in a picture takin’ mood this morning. The amount of Spanish moss in the tree and all over the ground is amazing. Perfect for an Ent Wig Hat. The first video in the A/V player now is of ol’ Sparky.

Did you think the headers would end up being so much fun? I’m just amazed how they’ve taken on a life of their own. To make one in a graphics program, it’s just 964 pixels wide and 185 pixels high. Start a new file with that canvas size and knock yourself out. Or draw it (like Jimmie’s been doing) inside a 10″ x 2″ outline and scan it. Email anything you make to me and I’ll frame it inside the border and ftp it up to the server.

The Szing: Coffee and Tea as it is meant to be.
This place is so cool. It’s right across the street from where I work, so I just walked over on my lunch hour with my laptop.
I’m having a yummy veggie sandwich on sourdough bread with a GREAT cup of coffee. They roast their own beans.
Their menu is projected on the wall, as is cable news. There’s also a lovely saltwater fishtank to look at. The walls are lined with computers that anyone can walk in and use FOR FREE!
    How cool is that?

Took me long enough to actually post on the “new” blog, no?

I apologize for my absence. A couple of gig-heavy months, then a couple of work-heavy months. The holidays are feeling like a break in comparison.

Here, I need to try posting a picture. Does anyone else dig Halloween as much as I do? I have to admit that everything I’m wearing (except the glasses) I already had in my closet.

that shows a little of how the runners go way down and then turn back up. And each one grows roots in the air like a spider plant, just ready to hit the dirt and start growing. And, each “hornpipe” sends out it’s own runners that drop down further so I don’t think there’s any limit to how many feet they could hang down if you just let it go. We pull the bottom ones off and start new pots. We need to get a greenhouse going.

The 30 acre canopy of almost solid elm leaves over our place has turned yellow. It’s just beautiful. There’s a soft rain and it really looks and feels like fall. Perfect for hot coffee and a slice of pumpkin pie. Don’t you love how leftovers’ flavor peaks after two days in the fridge? This photo doesn’t come close to showing the intense yellow - all I could do was stick my arm out the door with the camera and shoot blind because we have dogs that are covered in mud waiting to jump and play. We’re actually prisoners in our own house right now. Might try to make a run for it this afternoon and go see the Johnny Cash movie.

of everbody as we first got to Mitch and Hillary’s, just as we were trying to get all the food setup and organinzed. Very cool and very artistic I think. Just hit the A/V player in the iPod and it should run. We were a bunch of turkeys with our heads cut off and he certainly caught the truth about that. It continues to seem to me that Taylor has a really great eye for photography and video. He has six other pretty long videos, mostly of Baby David, that he’s asked me to prep for the blog so they’ll be popping up over the next couple of days. He also gave me some video from the hayride at Charlie Whipple’s 75 birthday party and that’s in the A/V player, too. Several other new things are in there so fish around and see what you can see. Anyone that has a broadband connection and some video they’ve taken with their digital camera can email it to me and I’ll convert it to a flash file and put it up.

Turkeys are lookin’ good. And Jimmie made some spinach crab dip with the crabs you saw in the post from Rockport. It’s delicious. We got another funny email - these are kids’ poems with a “try to save a turkey” theme. I like the one that says he has fleas.

from a company called Space Imaging. This one is Cozmel, Mexico. Evan and I were looking at it and what impressed him was that the airport landing strip is as long as the whole city. I noticed the pier and it impresses me as a good spot to fish from. (When Jimmie and I were there in the 70’s, we actually carried some little collapsible fishing poles in our luggage. But you had to have a license and we never figured out how to get one.) Also check out what Burning Man looks like from overhead. Try some different ones, they’re all good. And those are just the best of the week, I guess there’s a lot more. And there’s a keyword search.

Oh Boy. It’s like groundhog day. The problem with annual events associated with work is that they make you really, really, really realize that you’ve burned another year out of the ever dwindling inventory.
