Looking around at all our junk, I noticed we didn’t have an “International Land Yacht”.

OMG, is that a “tobahagan”? I’m truly jealous now. I have always wanted one of those things. And I’m not even being sarcastic. Just ask Kim and Chris.

I’m not sure, you mean as in “sled”?
I’ve wanted one for years, too. I’m really excited about it.

Does this mean you’re coming to visit us this summer? Can you fit Mom in there?
January 26th, 2006 22:39
I think so! And, coincidentally, Raymond called tonight and said that he hopes you might be his New Mexican art broker and that we should go see you and take a Rod Gobel painting for you to look at. Mom can hold it on the way out.
Actually, we have our little Casita which we’re in love with so instead of using this one to pull around camping, I think it could be setup somewhere and used as a weekend getaway. People are using them as cottages and even as Bed and Breakfasts.
One thing comes to mind , of course, is Rockport. If it was setup in the back, another couple could be down there and have their separate space. We had been thinking about that in the past, I just don’t know if that one needs to be as cool looking as this one is. Almost needs to be more out in the open to be appreciated. I found a website that tells how to polish them to that really cool shinny mirror finish.
I really don’t know what we’re going to do with it. I didn’t pay much for it so it’s not a big deal.

What kind of condition is it in?
January 27th, 2006 00:37
The outside shell is in almost perfect shape. No damage and it still has some shine to it. But of course the thing you do with these is buff them to where they look like a shinny new airplane. This one will do that much easier than most.
Inside, everything is solid. Floors are solid. Everything’s there and it’s all original. The walls and cabinets are painted with what looks like the original paint – it’s just 40 years worth of dingy. The floor covering is worn out. New linoleum, new paint top to bottom and new curtains and it will be pretty close to like new.

I remember the first one I ever saw was at a Woodlawn Hills Elementry School field day event. It belomged to Rocky McDougal’s Dad and
was pulled by a brand new gold colored ’47 Hudson power top convertible with electric window winders, a push button starter, and wide, wide whitwalls, fender skirt, and the first bumper jack I had ever seen…you couldn’t get the tires off without one.
The whole school watched a 8MM (no sound) picture show of the Grand Canyon, Yosimiti
Park vacation they took with it that summer.
The McDougals lived on Sunshine Drive and had a huge back yard full of old golf karts, Airborne Cushmans ( dropped by parashute from airplanes in World War II) They even had old airplanes sitting here and there. Piles of junk
(excuse me, piles of neat stit)organized in an informal comfortable manner.
Rocky’s Mother was my Cub Scout den mother and
Rocky and his dad built a soap box derby racer
that was simply beautiful and they wouldn’t let him race it because it was too good and would discouraged youthful builders.. . .so he put a motor in it and became the terror of Sunshine Pass with a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back…just like mine.
Rocky grew up and started a Porche repair and restoration business called Carrera Motors and
it was located just off Basse Road and San Pedro for many years.
I was talking to him on the phone about 2 years ago and he said he had something to show me. I went to see and it was a picture of me at this very same field day event and some ribbons I had won.
Rocky was about a year younger than I am but we were always close because we were doing the same crazy mechanical stuff and his Airstream trailer and his 356SE Porche were his favorite toys.
He was in bad health the last time I talked to him. . .God bless him. . .he had a good ride!

“Tobahage” is a Maggie-ism for Winnebago.
January 28th, 2006 11:10
Oh. And I’m verrrrrry jealous.
January 28th, 2006 12:24
What’s the story behind Tobahagan?
Jimmie and I now use Maggie’s word “Giganormous” all the time and it often just hit’s the spot better that our old word for stupid big which was…. hudge.
Giganormous is obvious but Tobahagan is a puzzler.

Ha! It was one of those times when i saw an awesome “Winnebago” but couldn’t come up with the word, and so Viola! The birth of “Tobahagan”. And it stuck.

It’s great. Is it “ha” or “hay” in the middle?
January 31st, 2006 22:32
i dunno… “ha” i guess… according to Da Countess’s Dictionary.
January 31st, 2006 22:40
I was hoping it was “ha”.
Has a nicer ring to it.
