one day I was standing at the fence talking to the neighbor and a mockingbird started diving in and out of the oak we were standing under – the bird was screaming and going crazy. We looked up and about three feet above us it was attacking a bull snake, about the size of the snake in the video. Suddenly our cat ran between my legs and up the tree to get at the mockingbird. She hadn’t seen the snake and ran up on top of it and when she realized she was standing on a snake she sprang up and off the branch – straight up like the bunny does in that video. She landed on a lower branch but shot right back up to get the bird who was still buzz-bombing the snake. They were all going crazy; the snake is lunging and striking at the cat, the bird is making a ton of noise flapping and pecking at the snake, the cat is hanging by one paw and scratching at the bird and hissing at the snake. It was like an air, sea and land battle. Claude, the good ol’ countryboy neighbor, calmly said “I’ll put two dollars on the mockingbird”. Then after a pretty long fight the snake dropped to the ground and slithered away and the mockingbird pecked the cat on the head a couple of times and she ran down. The bird wanted everybody out of her tree so I guess she won. She settled on the branch and started grooming her feathers. Mockingbirds are stubborn, natural born fighters.
But… I never thought a little field rabbit would run a snake off like that. They nest on the ground and she probably had some babies nearby.
