Must Do – Go take a nap right now so that even if (like me) you have to go to work tomorrow you can set your alarm clock for 2am when the show peaks and go outside to watch the Perseids Meteor Shower!!!
Mike Karshis says he’s going to watch from a hotel pool in the hill country! Now that’s planning ahead.
Me, I’ll be slathered in cutter missing my trampoline stretched out in a zero gravity chair.

    I speak “Jimmie” so let me translate. Trampoline. Over the past 13 or 14 years we’ve been in the habit of laying on the kid’s trampoline to watch meteor showers. It’s nice and comfortable to lay on. She’s missing it tonight because our children have gotten older and have lost most of their interest it in and we’ve stopped getting new tops. They wear out every three or four years under the burning sun. Taylor has informed Jimmie that he’s waking her up at 2:00 to walk out and go shooting star hunting.

    I just got home and was telling Jimmie that our friend Ray Chappa called earlier to say that he was viewing the meteor showers over the ocean from the end of the North Jetty in Port Aransas last night. You have to understand how cool that is. The North side of the Jetty is on St. Jo Island and there aren’t any bridges to it so you have to take a boat before dark, spend the night and then take a boat back in the morning. It’s rare for anybody else to be there and there’s no light pollution at all. They just take cots and sleep right there on the jetty. Wouldn’t you just love to do that?

    The other thing he called to say was that he took a picture of Jimmie catching a big redfish and it’s in this month’s issue of South Texas Fishing magazine.

    • John : we're back from another nice trip to the Kerrville Music Festival. You guys should come up one year. Not so much to see the concert but to experience the campground song circles that go all night. It's like day after day after day of The Woodzie. Just incredible.

    • John : I always try to share info on what happens to keep the blog running so you'll know when you run your own. We all benefit from a great WordPress spam filter that works in the background. Deirdre and several others will go in there and delete what sneaks through. In the years we've had the blog, over two million spam attempts have been made. It's caught almost all of them, it's like how almost 100% of meteorites burn up before they hit us. 8-O

    • John : So.... the answer finally came today from Weldon Whipple. We aren't related at all to the William Whipple who signed the Declaration of Independence. That was more than 200 years of misinformation. :roll: Both lines of Whipples were some of America's very earliest settlers coming here in the 1600's around the time of the Mayflower and both sides later played very important roles in the American Revolution. Our guy Abraham fired the first shot of the war, their guy signed the Delaration.

    • John : I appreciate you saying that. It's always been for every thousand Whippleworld readers maybe one will actually stop and make a comment. Now the competition from Facebook has brought that percentage down even further. And you're right, readership has actually gone up from linking posts here to Facebook. But everything is chasing FB's tail now.
    • Nancy : I've been looking at Whippleworld on and off for years. There are lots of family blogs trying to stay relevant under pressure from FB and Twitter. I say lots of family blogs but I've never seen one as active as this one. Have you? I don't see that FB is slowing you down that much. As a matter of fact I often come here from your Facebook posts so maybe it helps some already. :roll:
    • John : This blog's 8 years old with over 30,000 entries, each post with it's own URL - that's a blog so old and so big that it kinda has a life of it's own. We're bookmarked by tens of thousands of people, about half outside the U.S. We've always had tons of readers, just never tons of contributors. I guess we should learn ways to use it and Facebook together.

    • John : that's confusing - I typed as I was rushing out of the house. Look at the «link» There's some setup and tear down days but it boils down to 18 days of actual festival. For $575 a person can buy a couples pass which is 36 daily wristbadges; 2 for each day, one for each person in the couple. BUT.. if 2 couples or 4 people split the 18 days into 9 days, a more manageable time to be gone, it's $575 divided by 4 = $143.75. What's that, $15 a day? Brings it into the realm of possibilty.
    • John : Anybody want to go in on two complete festival passes to Kerrville this year? It's $550 for two. What you get is a wristband for every day and the word is you can divy them up to get the least expensive per day tickets. Math isn't a hippie strong suit. We don't want to be there the whole month but I'm thinking maybe there might be another couple who'd like to split up the weeks and end up paying $275 for two people to be there up to 10 days.

    • Jimmie : For breakfast I had 3 diced hard-boiled eggs, mixed with 1/2 cup lentils, some crumbled bacon and topped with a bit of Vidalia onion salad dressing. All on a giant bed of spinach. (Okay I actually eat the first part with a spoon and shove the copious amounts of baby spinach leaves into my mouth by hand, but you get the picture). And that's what I eat first thing every morning, now. ;)
    • John : Jimmie and I are doing good on our "slow carb" diet. We're eating super healthy. Except on Saturday, on Saturday we can eat cookies and ice cream. One day off and six days on... it gets the weight loss job done without the mentail anguish of having to give up treats that you like. Having Saturday as our cheat day makes it feel like food Christmas. The rest of the week we eat a lot of chicken, beef, eggs, lentils and spinach. All very slow burning food.

    • John : We're back from the desert. Jimmie and I found out that a long weekend in Terlingua is about all the bone dry, flat, treeless terrain we can take. We started getting lizardlike scales and flicking our tongues out to catch bugs. We tore out right after the festival ended and spent all day Monday on the river. By the end of a day in Concan soaking in the Frio we were normal again. :cool:

    • John : thanks for all the calls checking on us but we're fine. New Braunfels has such a bad reputation for flooding - part of our land is creek bed and it floods but where our house sits is up high enough that water doesn't stand. Our dried up old brown weeds are turning green again after two days of rain. :mrgreen:
    • John : for us it's only an hour and maybe half a Whippleworld away. :razz:
    • Steve : Austin is both 3 hours and a whole world away.....
    • John : we're hanging out in Winona's house. Playing with her big, fat cat and watching her big screen TV. Living large. We were going non-stop yesterday but we're relaxing this morning. Going to the art museum this afternoon. We're treating this like a tourist trip to some distant destination.

    • John : I feel for ya. I've had my kids get sudden wild rashes from head to toe and weird infections and delirious fevers; it's the scariest thing there is. BUT they ended up being fine every time. I bet that's what will happen with your daughter. A week from now it'll be in the rear view mirror.

    • Guest_1012 : she developed large boils, pink eye, sores on her mouth... taking anti-biotics now

    • John : No, I wasn't at Krause Spings. If your kid has an infected area get her to a doctor right away. They can tell pretty quick. It's probably not what you fear but any infection can get serious really fast.

    • Guest_1012 : sorry, I just landed on this website by doing a search on Krouse Springs and MRSA... took my daughters camping two weeks ago and now my littlest one is showing signs... I'm kind of scared
