Redbirds and Hummers

are at our feeders all day. It’s a really nice Texas Hill Country thing. What dramatically changed this summer is that Jimmie put a radiant heat blocking film on the sliding glass door by my desk facing the feeders. Does a miraculous job of keeping the heat out so we can leave the blinds open. From the inside it looks like lightly tinted polarized sunglasses but from the outside looking in it’s reflective enough that it makes a one way glass where we see them but the birds can’t see us. And what we didn’t expect was how much it attracts them right up to the glass because they see their reflection and fly over to check out that crazy jacked up bird who’s starring them in the eyes. They do the Lucy/Zippo Marx mirror skit for a long time. We’ll stand right up next to the 7 foot wide window and a hummingbird will come and hover six inches in front of our eyes. Sometimes three or four hummers will be out there with five or six Redbirds. I think we’ve accidentally stumbled across the best viewing setup in the world. The only bad thing is that you can’t photograph through the film very well. It darkens, polarizes and defuses everything. Doesn’t do it to what your eyes sees but it does it to what the lens sees. I may have to cut a camera hole.

I just got back from one of my whirlwind tours of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Whenever I go I do a three day stint of some combination of Harlingen/ Brownsville/McAllen/Edinburg/Pharr, etc. This time it was just the first three. Beside the fact that the people are so nice down there, I always enjoys these trips because of the birds and the plants. I always see something interesting; a flock of parakeets, caracaras and what I believe are different kinds of ibises. This time one of the coolest sights was a firebush just covered in hummingbirds.
I’m hoping that I’m able to go back in November and maybe stay a couple of days during the big birding festival.
