Well, I was just talking to mother on her cell phone. She said she was up in the observation deck and could look around in all directions. Then there on the other side of Marfa her phone suddenly cut off. That’s dangerous wild west Texas, they may have run into this guy….

They have arrived! Renee picked them up at the railroad station and Mother called as they were driving into the mountain backdrop of Silver City. Sounds like they made it without mishap all the way through the wildest of the wild west.

I know that for a long time people were not willing to try extended train travel because they tended not to run on time. But Momma and Grace’s train arrived in Deming NM just 15 minutes later than scheduled. My last two trips were both either on time or no more than 30 minutes late. Of course, I’ve heard that Westward travel is more consistent than Eastward. Which makes sense considering the differences in population density.

I would love to see a resurgence of train travel. It is so much more enjoyable than flying and, in some cases - such as travel to the Big Bend area, no less convenient.

There’s quite a range; it depends upon whether you want to ride coach, or have a “roomette” or a cabin. In my experience, Coach pretty much costs less than you would pay for gas for a similar trip. My last round trip on Amtrak to Alpine was $116. Momma and Grace’s trip, with a roomette, cost slightly less than two round trip plane tickets to El Paso and the cost of Renee’s gas from Silver to El Paso. Also, when you get the roomette or the cabin, all your meals are included.

Guest_1215 : Oh heck I dunno....just never fished since I was a kid. I guess I got spoiled with people giving me fish and selling the stuff for a pretty cheap price. I did get all busy and homeschooled both of our daughters and they're now in their twenties, both married and in their own homes. I think I need to rediscover myself and what really matters. Fishing in a quiet place is indeed like a vitamin for the soul.

Guest_2590 : I dig eating salmon the most, the teriyaki flavor is my fav. and smoked salmon the other that I like a lot. Had a coconut tree when we bought this place but it was tween 30 and 40ft. high, not even safe to mow under cuz you couldn't hear if the things were about to fall, so....we had it chopped down, sorry to say.

John : Evan marched in the marching band in his first High School football game this weekend. New Braunfels Canyon Cougars vs. Pflugerville. Friday Night Lights in Texas is serious business. Our daughter Casey was a Canyon Cougar Cheerleader so we've made our contribution to the gridiron here over the years. Evan sez he expects the best part will be the craziness on the midnight bus rides back from little neighboring Texas cities. Triumphantly back after booming them with some massive tuba.
John : Funny how even back in the 60's the price of milk was the barometer for how expensive Hawaii was. Ain't no cows, ain't no wheat fields. But I think I could go on the coconut and fish diet. My question (of course) would be how's the fishing? Are there any shallow bays to fish Texas trout and redfish style? If we ever come visit we'll bring a couple of gallons of milk.

We wanted a view so we had diner on the high balcony at the River Pub and watched the lightning show over the San Marcos River. Very much worth the effort. Be on the lookout for classic Texas thunderstorms this week, it's the season.

John : Yeah, she's a great person. Casey, your Mom handmade a quilt for Elida's first baby - they always had a special connection. Elida and Jimmie and I did some trips together: New Mexico, the Valley, Las Vegas and they really enjoyed each other's company. I have 10 years of Elida stories and she has ten years on me.. we'll have plenty of time left in life to sit around and laugh at the funny parts. She came with AB to the Tejas party several months ago and it was very nice. I told her how much I missed her. One of her first questions was "where's Jimmie?" and they sat down a visited quite a while.

It's amazing we've done as much as we have over the years as hard as it is to round up the Whippleworld campers at the same time.

I had the exact same thing with Casey so I know it's survivable but the daddy difficulty level for me in watching Taylor drive off down the street by himself is really high. He's a good driver but he's an inexperienced driver and it's deadly out there. Like with Casey, I have a big sense of pride in them doing it but for the first couple of months, it's hell.

Jimmie : What I like is how I get to know someone through their comments, and if no name is given there can be none of that. If you take credit for what you say it gives others a chance to build a picture of who you are. Bonds and ties can grow. Relationships develop. I have found that this is a pretty safe place for me to be myself, and want to encourage all anony-mouses to give it a try!

John : It was custom coded for us by a really smart guy named Uzyn in Singapore. Then the rest of us kept adding stuff to where it's now as full as the bed on the Beverley Hillbillies' pickup truck. I could probably give you template if you want it.

guest_3289 : I can't figure out how you get the header and all the little photo thumbnails to change every time you enter this blog. How do you do that? It's great.
John : I was telling ya... Quicktime is the most efficient stream. I don't like Quicktime for everything but sometimes you just can't beat it.

John : I think Dew and Celina's thing is very authentic. One of the best aspects of Americana is the homemade and personal part. I just love it.
