A hobo would make a mark near a house, often carved on a fence post or tree, letting those who came after know what his experience knocking on that door was. Nice lady, mean dog, good soup. Here’s that sign language. Why didn’t we think, like these guys have, of using chalk marks like these on the sidewalks at Halloween? Same basic situation.
