A hobo would make a mark near a house, often carved on a fence post or tree, letting those who came after know what his experience knocking on that door was. Nice lady, mean dog, good soup. Here’s that sign language. Why didn’t we think, like these guys have, of using chalk marks like these on the sidewalks at Halloween? Same basic situation. :)

This is a great time of the year to go fishing. A lot of fisherman these days will glance at webcams before they go out. The Internet will take you there live in three seconds. I’ve noticed that these water proof webcams usually make things look dingier and darker than they really are. BUT… you can watch to see if anybody’s taking pictures of their catch at Deep Sea Headquarters, if there’s seaweed on the beach at PINS, watch cars lining up for the ferry to see how long the lines are running. Each of the photos down this page will open up a central coastal webcam.

Haley and I aren’t as talented :)

Last week Haley and I carved pumpkins but apparently the Archer girls are just not as skilled- our pumpkins were a little special- we used old steak knives and I free handed mine- but even though my slit-nose pumpkin was a little unconventional the Olmos Bharmacy still wanted mine so now its sitting on a table outside their door. Take note that the optometrist’s pumpkin has one eye that is bigger than the other- Tonight I’m carving pumpkins again and we’ll see if my second attempt is better than my first…

but Mitch and Hillary had a flock of little David sized humans at their house yesterday for his birthday party. He loved it. Hillary may be emailing some photos so these are just a couple of teasers for aunts, uncles and cousins around the world.

Hospitals Suck

So last night around 5 pm I started throwing up blood. So I tried to wait it out but by 10:30 I couldn’t take it any more. So Sean took me to North East Methodist and it took 7 hours to see a doctor. I realized where I went wrong was I went to a hospital that accepts people w/o insurance. I have great insurance I need to find the expensive hospitals if I want to be helped in a timely manner. Also they tried to stick a tube down my nose to collect samples from my stomach and it turns out I have small nasal passages because it hurt so bad, got stuck, and bled everywhere. So I got a cat scan and everything is ok as far as there is no ulcer but I do have elevated white blood cell count so something is going on. So I need to go see a gastrologist and have a camera put down my throat. Sounds like fun. Not really. Well it is 10 am and I am just now getting to bed. Goodnight everyone!

For Weekend America’s Halloween show this year we invited some writers to come up with scary stories that last no longer than half a minute. We did it last year too and it was lots of fun. I figure scary stories are fun but honestly who has time for the whole “he walked down the hall, step…by…step” nonsense, GET TO THE ACTION, I always say.

So this year we have an interesting crew: David Rakoff, Dana Gould, comics creator Richard Sala, a children’s book writer, a horror writer, all adhering to the strict 30 seconds or less rule.

It’s on the air 10-25 or found online here: Tales of Terror. Here’s last year’s edition, which featured Neil Gaiman among others.

It's caught almost all of them, it's like how almost 100% of meteorites burn up before they hit us. 8-O

Like you advised with Taylor, we saved a ton of money compared to your first two years with him going to SAC. And he loved it, it was just what he needed.

    • John : Looks like we're not going to be able to drive to see Renee and then onto California this summer after all. It's the boys; Evan's going to New Orleans with Matt and Taylor's job hunting and trying to get organized to start Texas State. Well, there's always next summer for that. This summer we're going to pick a little closer vacation for maybe four days. We can get on each others nerves and easily make it feel like two weeks.
    • John : An audio engineer who worked for me went to Full Sail and it was wonderful for him. I think he may have recouped his tuition from that first job so I guess I've paid for one already. «link»

    • John : We spent four days camping on the Ranch where they hold the Folk Festival. Had to soak in the tub forever last night to start feeling semi-clean again. Every week out there is some kind of weather issue, you just have to accept it. This past weekend it was a relentless dusty wind. We brought a pound or more of Kerrville home with us. Mostly in my nose and ears. Some between my toes. :cool:
    • John : we're getting a much later start than planned but we're headed to Kerrville right now to see the very, very beginning of the Kerrville Folk Festival. It's a week before the actual start but tonight is the "land rush" tailgate party. I don't think our cell phones work at Pleasant Valley Ranch but we'll be back by Monday. See ya!

    • John : So.... the answer finally came today from Weldon Whipple. We aren't related at all to the William Whipple who signed the Declaration of Independence. That was more than 200 years of misinformation. :roll: Both lines of Whipples were some of America's very earliest settlers coming here in the 1600's around the time of the Mayflower and both sides later played very important roles in the American Revolution. Our guy Abraham fired the first shot of the war, their guy signed the Delaration.
    • John : we had a very nice Mother's Day family lunch at Casey's this afternoon. Thanks Casey!

Now the competition from Facebook has brought that percentage down even further. And you're right, readership has actually gone up from linking posts here to Facebook. But everything is chasing FB's tail now.
    • Nancy : I've been looking at Whippleworld on and off for years. There are lots of family blogs trying to stay relevant under pressure from FB and Twitter. I say lots of family blogs but I've never seen one as active as this one. Have you? I don't see that FB is slowing you down that much.     • John : This blog's 8 years old with over 30,000 entries, each post with it's own URL - that's a blog so old and so big that it kinda has a life of it's own. We're bookmarked by tens of thousands of people, about half outside the U.S. We've always had tons of readers, just never tons of contributors. For $575 a person can buy a couples pass which is 36 daily wristbadges; 2 for each day, one for each person in the couple. BUT.. if 2 couples or 4 people split the 18 days into 9 days, a more manageable time to be gone, it's $575 divided by 4 = $143.75. What's that, $15 a day? Brings it into the realm of possibilty.
    • John : Anybody want to go in on two complete festival passes to Kerrville this year? It's $550 for two. What you get is a wristband for every day and the word is you can divy them up to get the least expensive per day tickets. Math isn't a hippie strong suit.     • Jimmie : For breakfast I had 3 diced hard-boiled eggs, mixed with 1/2 cup lentils, some crumbled bacon and topped with a bit of Vidalia onion salad dressing. All on a giant bed of spinach. (Okay I actually eat the first part with a spoon and shove the copious amounts of baby spinach leaves into my mouth by hand, but you get the picture). And that's what I eat first thing every morning, now. ;)
    • John : Jimmie and I are doing good on our "slow carb" diet. We're eating super healthy. Except on Saturday, on Saturday we can eat cookies and ice cream. One day off and six days on... it gets the weight loss job done without the mentail anguish of having to give up treats that you like. Having Saturday as our cheat day makes it feel like food Christmas. The rest of the week we eat a lot of chicken, beef, eggs, lentils and spinach. All very slow burning food.

    • John : We're back from the desert. Jimmie and I found out that a long weekend in Terlingua is about all the bone dry, flat, treeless terrain we can take. We started getting lizardlike scales and flicking our tongues out to catch bugs. We tore out right after the festival ended and spent all day Monday on the river. By the end of a day in Concan soaking in the Frio we were normal again. :cool:

    • John : Our friend Brad Svoboda is back from Hawaii and will be at Riley's tonight to tell the tale. Brad set a goal for himself to ride a motorcycle in all 50 states before turning 40. Over the years he's been taking long trips and the states added up. Why Hawaii this week? Because he had 49 after he did Alaska in July of last year and Oct. 2nd, next week, is his birthday. His 40th. Well done Brad.

    • John : thanks for all the calls checking on us but we're fine. New Braunfels has such a bad reputation for flooding - part of our land is creek bed and it floods but where our house sits is up high enough that water doesn't stand. Our dried up old brown weeds are turning green again after two days of rain. :mrgreen:

    • Steve : Austin is both 3 hours and a whole world away.....
    • John : we're hanging out in Winona's house. Playing with her big, fat cat and watching her big screen TV. Living large. We were going non-stop yesterday but we're relaxing this morning. Going to the art museum this afternoon. We're treating this like a tourist trip to some distant destination.

    • John : I feel for ya. I've had my kids get sudden wild rashes from head to toe and weird infections and delirious fevers; it's the scariest thing there is. BUT they ended up being fine every time. I bet that's what will happen with your daughter. A week from now it'll be in the rear view mirror.

    • John : No, I wasn't at Krause Spings. If your kid has an infected area get her to a doctor right away. They can tell pretty quick. It's probably not what you fear but any infection can get serious really fast.

    • Guest_1012 : sorry, I just landed on this website by doing a search on Krouse Springs and MRSA... took my daughters camping two weeks ago and now my littlest one is showing signs... I'm kind of scared
