Interview with some Abbey Road shots

November 30th, 2008 @ 14:43

Cassell mentioned being in the studio again with Izzy Cooper, I had bookmarked this a while ago when Mitch and I were talking about Abbey Road. I had emailed the link along with some other stuff to a guy we were talking to about building a large studio like it. You see Cassell on the couch, there’s some nice shots of Craig at the board and a few of the rooms. If you haven’t seen pictures of Abbey Road since The Beatles, this is a little hint of what it looks like now. Of course the moving faders are new.

Glenn says he’s a natural at it. I talked to Taylor about playing with him at the next opportunity. See if any of these links are helpful. He’ll beat you if you don’t practice up.

Buster Keaton and Hank Williams

Yep, Buster Keaton and Hanks Williams mashed up. This kind of thing is turning people onto songs they wouldn’t hear otherwise. It’s kind of like a new version of radio. I’ve always felt this is one of the coolest songs ever recorded. Hank Williams of course had

Hawk

look who I just photographed out the window. SuperHawk! I know it’s hard to tell how big he is in a photo but that’s a thick 4 or 5 inch branch he’s sitting on. This bad boy is a foot and a half tall. He could fly away carrying your cat. Not Winona’s cat, but our little cat for sure. In military talk you’d say he’s in complete control of the airspace above our yard.

What attractive ancestors if I do say so myself. Don’t Granddad and Aunt Virginia look like sweethearts? Mable and Howard look alike and Raymond and Virginia also look like a pair. Granddad has quite the cool getup on. Those are socks and a half.

Gini and I were looking at this photo and she clarified who is in it. People were glancing at it and I promised some of Virginia’s grandchildren that I’d scan it and post it. In the backrow it’s Mabel Whipple and Howard Whipple and in the front Virginia Whipple and Raymond Whipple. Raymond Whipple, Sr. of course, is John Sr.’s father, my grandfather and Casey, Taylor and Evan’s great grandfather. Lester, Henry and Mary were not in the photo because I guess they had left the nest. Lester had been to The University of Texas, Henry was killed in World War 1 so he was alive at this time but probably away from home, Mary was possibly at college…. I believe the same one right up the road that Casey graduated from.

Thanksgiving 2008

This is another version of what Dad posted earlier. It was a great Thanksgiving but will go down as the least photographed in recent memory. When I started to realize that was going to be the case I tried to save the photo tradition at the last minute with a group pose. Had 100% of everybody pulled away from what they were doing and lined up and it was an impressive shot, about three times this many people all overflowing the porch. But the camera wouldn’t work right. I had to turn around and reach for another camera. Know what happens when take your eyes off this bunch for a minute?…. desertion. These are the nice guys willing to come back for a “redo”. Or the ones just slow to get up and run after the first failed shot. Look at Mitch smiling, he in particular appreciated the humor in it. :)

Dad, Renee, Jimmie, Taylor, Evan and I stopped in at the Smith thanksgiving yesterday, it was wonderful. I hope to be stopping in every year from now on. What’s made it possible is that Leanne has moved to New Braunfels. This photo shows the main characters linking our branches of the family tree; from left to right it’s

thanksgiving venison

we let our friends hunt with bow and arrow on our 32 acres here and they’ve been really successful. I was able to bar-b-que some home grown venison backstrap for the feast. Shot Indian style. Backstrap is tender and has more flavor than almost any other meat but it’s 100% fat free so it’s dry. To get a little fat into it to pull the flavor out you cut it into strips and wrap it in bacon and put a toothpick to hold it together. It’s deer filet mignon. I smoked them next to the turkey, on the side away from the coals so they’d smoke slow, for a couple of hours and used some applewood bacon and that with the oak wood flavor made these extra tasty. Real Indian and pilgrim food. :)
