- John : our three big old German Shepherds don't even come out from under the house unless we call them or somebody comes to the fence. The heat index is 110 degrees and these poor guys can't take their coats off. They spend their days now hiding from the burning eye in the sky.

- John : It was 106 degrees in New Braunfels today. These are some of the highest temperatures ever for this time of year. It's scary hot.
- John : Mom has a couple of special guests coming, too. Should be a great night. I wrote a song that we're going to play at our 35th Roosevelt High School Reunion on Saturday and Jimmie, Steve and I may give it a run through tomorrow. We may run through it or we may run over it.
- Tyler Archer : Roland has some stuff on myspace that sounds pretty good- I'm excited and trying to pump up my fam that's coming tomorrow too
- John : Well, we'll miss you. The special guest this week is Roland Garcia from San Antonio, he comes highly recommended.

- Tyler Archer : More fun guests- my sister and her best friend (the other maid of honor) are coming too! Whoo-hoo!
- Ann Pattillo : I am bringing my friend Margie with me Thursday night, it will be her first. (Interesting note; Parke delivered either 2 or 3 of her grandchildren)! She came to my 70th birthday party also. I might have some friends coming from Seguin too.
- Tyler Archer : My dad and step mom are coming to Thursday Night Music Club this week! Whoo-hoo!
- John : I sure look forward to Gary coming back to play at one of our things. He's great.
- Ann Pattillo : Gary Trial of the Countrymen has been fortunate so far, because being at the very top of the country bands he has had several of the best set in for Al. They are looking for one that will stay for the duration of Al's recovery time, so they can learn the material & whatever. The Countrymen are a band that doesn't have to think or ask what they will do next it's continuous. - Ann Pattillo : Well, I have to make my monthly report on the best "good ole Country music band there is "The Countrymen" played such great music last nigh at Martinez Social Club. I danced for 3 hrs and had a ball. Bad news is that Al Mahachek (sp) fell out of his deer blind, and besides beating up his whole body, it shattered his left heel which is control heel as he plays the Steel Guitar. He will have surgery next Thursday and will be out of commission for at least 6 months. Gary has been fortunate so fa

- John : yeah, most of us grew up calling it the purrr din al iss but it's really the ped der nal iss. And yeah, Barton Springs is still the most popular swimming hole in Austin. When you last saw it it was probaby filled with hippies. Now it's filled with soccer moms and out of work dot.com-ers.
- Karen in Hawaii~ : Do people still swim in Barton Springs pool?? I lived 10yrs. in Austin and swam in that thing a lot as a kid. Thanks for stirring some memories, and GOD BLESS Jimmie in the healing dept.

- Ann Pattillo : I am so glad Jimmie finally got that stone out. A couple of my friends have had that done & say they feel so much better. I told those boys to take good care of her and Leslie says he would. Jimmie take as long as you can. Read the Erma Bombeck things she would do over (if she could)
- John : She got her little bandages off. It's looking good.
- John : Jimmie's feeling pretty good. She's up and walking around. I'm going to make sure she doesn't overdo.
- John : it's 9:00, just got Jimmie home and setup and comfortable in her own little bed. This was a day surgery gall bladder removal - Jim's had a stone for years and it just needed to go. She's very sore right now but all and all doing good. She's happy to have it done. I had a thyroid gizzard cut out last year - now that we're 50 plus, Jimmie and I are making a start on having our giblets removed.
- DAP : Good news on the Whipple front! Jimmie is out of surgery and doing great. She'll be heading home in just a little while.
- Malcolm : Thank you Robyn and Mark for the open invitation to the Guadalupe! Katie, Charlie, Toni & I had a blast!
We only wish we could have stayed the night. On the other hand, Charlie had a great time on his first day at Football Camp and Katie is now a Brownie.

- Tyler Archer : Dr. Swift got a job today- who need their eyes checked? Her license is effective in August and she can start seeing patients (aka friends and relatives) then

- John : we're going to switch to a new layout for our website here pretty soon. Besides a clearner look and faster load times, what you'll notice will be that many of the sidebar things are going to change; some will stay similar to how they are now, some will go away because they didn't work or we didn't use them and some will be replaced with better ones. I'm not sure when the urban renewal will be done but I'm working on it a little at a time. It'll be good a big improvement when it's done.
- John : Conan's first Tonight show was that night and GM filed that morning... General Motors exactly did go broke before Conan became king of late night T.V.

- Ann Pattillo. : I'm getting ready to go dancing,which is at least a 3 hour chore since I am definately slowing down to crawl these days, but Jonah & willie were down in the pool & I went down to say Hello and Jonah says Grandma you look OLD. I figure I'd better check on the cremation right away when sweet innocent Jonah tells me that.

What it means is that when an order for one comes in, they have automated machines that pulls the music off their servers, burns a disc, prints the sleeve, inserts, shrink wraps and ships it in one process. Save a lot of garage space.

- John : Well, last night at the Thursday Night Social started slow but it sure ended great. We had hand drums and mandolin and harmonica and Art Guillermo on the piano and a big circle of singers. Just amazing what improvement all of that and specially a well played piano can make. It felt like a band.
- John : Wow. If you look down the list there's some Jimmy Rogers in there. Those are a very cool piece of history. His price is right, between a dollar and two dollars each is a bargain.

But please know that there are 65 members of this blog who can email in and that came in on an email, I'm sure from someone thinking it was true.... but we don't vouch for it in any way. Treat it like an urban legend. San Antonio is famous for it's urban legends.
- John : We've had a spike in visits to the blog. Caused oddly enough by that San Antonio Duck story. I get data on all the activity; there's about a hundred families around the world who read here if not every day up to every week or so. Then maybe two hundred families who come less often, about once every couple of weeks. Most all of that kind of visitor are people who know us, family and friends. Then we see a couple of thousand people a month who just wander in from topic and image searches

- MF : I met Steve Earle yesterday, Had the most killer Motorcycle ride with two super cool people, AKA John and Brad through breathtaking Texas Hill Country, ended the whole damn thing with a beautiful girl.....Life is good man, life is frickin' good! - John : Yes ma'am, it's great. And that would be a historical fit for your wedding because you have lots of family from New Braunfels and Llano. There's different philosophies of bar-b-que - like religions. In Texas you have your Unitarian bar-b-que all the way up to your Catholic bar-b-que. Coopers would be your speaking in tongues holy roller type. Very possibly the best in the world. Before they came to New Braunfels people would drive hundreds of miles to get it in Llano. Now, and we're so lucky, it's two miles from our house.
- Casey : Sean and I picked up the kegs today and we stopped and had lunch at Cooper's amd OMG that stuff is the sht! Sean wants them to cater our wedding now. We are in love with Cooper's!

- HillaryW : And it worked too! We did get to fish a bit, and dig for worms and pick up beetles and throw rocks. All that rain made it 68 degrees which caused me to break out in goosebumps!
- John : ...this is the Internet age. Mitch and Hillary were taking David to fish up in Comfort, Texas but they started to run into rain. Mitch called Jimmie and she was able to get on the weather radar site and tried to "air traffic control" them around the thunderstorms. All in real time. Satellites, WiFi, cell phones... massive power at our fingertips for free. Less technology than what was used in that one phone call put a man on the moon.
- John : MItch and The Band put on a great show. There was a big party and the place was packed. Jimmie said "pretty please" and Joe said he'd be happy to play her birthday party at HOTEL FAUST this Thursday. Plan on coming, it'll be great.
- John : Jimmie and I are going to ride the motorcycle up the old farm to market road to Riley's to watch Uncle Mitchie & The Swindles. Join us! Not on the motorcycle, there's no room. But at Riley's.

- John : The Faust was great last night. Deirdre's friend Betty who does the house concerts was there and she loves it, said it has a really special feeling. Forcing people to sing is endearing. She's going to help us by sending people our way. Elaine from another house concert series came and had a great impression of it. One thing I hadn't thought of before is that people practicing at our Thursday night thing might get some house concerts gigs. This is house concert training camp.

- Ann Pattillo : I had a wonderful Mother's Day thanks to everyone. You know last week I danced 3 hrs Wed night, 3hrs Sat when it was so hot, and Sunday afternoon for 3hrs. I challenge anybody to do that with me. But the sad thing is, it is not enough. I am going to have to get some kind of help with my food issue. There isn't any food I really want anymore isn't that sad, I always loved food. Well I'm ready for our next get together, which I guess is THURSDAY at the beautiful "FAUST HOTEL".

- John : Well, Mr. Evan has his own Woodzie within the Woodzie with all his High School buddies on a big area of the ridge called "O.J. Land". Then Glenn and them have "Allantown" with a big community of tents. Then some people stay near "The Boneyard"... the Woodzie is so spread out - that's why it's rare to see more than 50 or 60 people at one place at one time... they're all over the 30 acres. Notice how when you looked out people were walking up and down the trails and through the trees? Goin' places.
- Ann Pattillo : Don't get tired of me going on & on about the Woodzie, there are too many people to recognize. But I thought that Casey(my angel) did a beautiful job of keeping the music flowing. Taylor did a great job reading the vows, a grandma just has to brag a little bit. I think Grace had a really good time, and Jonah was in 7th heaven playing with all the kids. Evan I missed totally, and Tyler was having a wonderful time.
- Ann Pattillo : Chris did his usual wonderful sound magic. He's just great! What would a Woodzie be without him? I won't even think about that ever happening, and I don't think he would either. We love you Chris!
- Ann Pattillo : It was so good to see & hear "Thoze Guys" from Sweetwater. They just love anything having to do with John Whipple & his music events. I sure do appreciate them & love their music. - Ann Pattillo : This year's Woodzie was the BEST ever! All the music was great. Wasn't Renee just great, and her sister did her part just great also. Everybody was having such a wonderful time,and clearly enjoying the setting of such a warm gathering of friends, making new friends, looking forward to the next one. Thank you each & everyone that worked so hard to make the "2009 Woodzie" so memorable.

- John : Uncle Raymond gave us a Playschool log cabin to give to David when he was little. To make room for his swingset we got it back. I had David out here this morning and he walked up to it and lovingly said "I want this back". I had to get down on one knee and tell him that in the mortgage crisis lots of boys had had their log cabins repoed.
- MF : The Thursday night Chautauqua was awesome as ever. Dan was truly the man.
- Casey Ann : I'm sitting at home. Sean is at Fiesta at the Whitti Museum - he ran into Tyler. I didn't go b/c I knew I couldn't resist the temptation. Sean got VIP passes and went w/ his buddies. Sean was kind enough to tell me all about the free sushi and grey goose. I am sad. I had grilled chicken and water.

- Ann Pattillo : Taylor, grandma has 52 T shirts for you. Man, I am too pooped to go dancing tonight my friend Sandra & I rose to the occasion & went T shirting 2 days in a row! - John : Google is so wild, they have so much money. They own YouTube and so they're mixing video and search by converting the speech in all the billions of YouTubes to text and making that searchable. So you enter the word "guitar" or "shoe" or whatever and it finds video that has that word in it. Try it. «link»
- John : Yeah, you're exposed. Obviously any little slip up isn't a fender bender like in a car, it's a major thing.
- MF : I am back from my first Harley ride. Bugs in my teeth and I passed Brads mini cycle safety class. I felt like a worm among huge feet trying to avoid being squashed. It is spooky John, you are right.

- John : Casey and Sean took Evan and I to see Bruce Springsteen in Austin last night. It was great - about three quarters of the way through they kicked into Born To Run and it was as good a moment in a concert as I've ever seen. The place just about exploded. Evan's been front row at the Stones and now Springsteen so he's getting experienced.
- John : It's great that they've paid out 100 million dollars - they're probably the best thing out there. Their heart's always been in the right place. «link» But of course divide the 100 million they've paid out since they started by the number of members who have ever participated and that will be the average. I'd do the deal anyway but I have several snare drums that are really expensive and several that are in parts but I just don't have a ready to go under $200 snare drum. Like me, Casey really likes Brad's Masterbuilt. Even thought it doesn't have any ornimentation that's kind of what we're thinking right now.

- John : even though the economy in general is awful and the music industry in specific is even worse, we had a successful Tejas VIP Party. The line this year didn't go around the block until 11:00, an hour after that usually happens which was weird; this year was a late starter. As I'd hoped, the Tejas Brothers did a great unplugged set that was a highlight. Kind of like when we had Del Castillo, people were scratching their heads wondering what that was.

- Biggie G : Bun N Barrel is now owned by Tong's Thai and has been restored to all it's former glory, intact. Tong's rented their building (Which used to be a bar, the first I ever played in SA.) for years, evenyually bought it, then last year they bought the Bun N Barrel property. They fixed the neon, painted, redecotared inside ('50's motif) and it's as good as new.

From Mr. and Mrs. Webb and my Mom and Dad and Cassell and Becky and Jimmie and Mitch and down to Casey and further down to Vann.... we've all known that S.A. landmark. What's happening there?
- Biggie G : Well, I've been cleaning up my firepit area and decorating... So it's my house, Fri the 27th, 7ish 'til they kick us out. Beer, booze and light snacks. I'll get a little bucket o' that crazy good Bun 'n' Barrel chop bbq, a pile of tortillas and Mexican beer. Robyn is bringin' some Dickel for Dick. Y'all want anything else...bring it! Pass the werd!!
- John : That sounds good to me! I certainly want to play with Lynne's Dad. I've been hearing great stories for years. Glenn, if the weather's good and you want to do it at the Woodzie site, that would be great. We could walk around and eyeball the upcoming Woodzie preperations. But either way, you just let us know.
- MF : So is the Glenn-Zie song circle On like 6 to a pound Mexican prawn? Next Friday?
- John : I just talked to Ann/Mom and she sounds awful. Sounds like the flu. Take it easy and get better Mom!
- Ann/mom : Glen it sound like a great time to me. Right now I'm just blowing my nose from an infection, but I promise to be good and not make that part of the music venue! Ya'll just let me know
- Biggie G : Next Friday, the 27th, may be a good song circle night. It's good for me anyway... We can do it at my house around the firepit, no camping. Or maybe John will offer his gigantic backyard with optional, micro-woodzie camping. Lynne's Dad will be here to play dobro. I'm planning on using him that Saturday night for my Scenic Loop gig, so I need to get him warmed up.
- John : Karen, we're glad to have you. It has always surprised me how many friends have connections to Hawaii. In late April there'll be a lot of info on The Woodzie and how to tune into the broadcast of it.
- Karen/Hawaii : Okay, I talk too much, God bless and huggz to you Whipples.
- Karen/Hawaii : Thanks for sharing and ya know...I ain't read even ten percent of your site yet, but I will. Man...seeing y'all sit around outside with the guitars brings back memories of Lake Austin and a ton of crazy, good cray of course cousins enjoying the ones talented enough to be pickin and grinnin. I bet y'all will be jammin, too.

- Ann/mom : Brad, I was trying to say I just cannot believe anyone would say you squeal. Don't worry it's not true.

- John : Karen, on May 2nd we're going to have our annual musical festival here and we'll stream video of it over the Internet. You'll be able to see and hear Jimmie and everybody sing. There'll be a post here with a link, just watch for it. Co-incidentally, Stephen Ingles, a slack key guitarist from Hawaii is coming to be a special performer. We have family and friends in England and Hong Kong and Singapore and Mexico and all over and Whippleworld readers who can't be here can tune in over the Internet and be a part of it!
- Karen/Hawaii : Oh wow! When in grade school I lived at the corner of Guadalupe and Delafield Ln...for almsot ten years! It's so cool to see y'all playing in Austin. I miss Texas, a ton of family and friends, the rodeo time of year, everything about TEXAS. One of my nephews is on the rodeo committee this year and I hear having a grand time, and his young son is showing a hog. Okay, I'll hush. Glad I peeked in. - MF : we are all there to hear you...and Brad squeals like a little school girl when you do shrimp boat... I swear he actually blushes... I think it might be time for a Micro Woodzie!
- John : I'm saying that in a one song each turn format, when somebody's suffering through me or Joe Bob "This Thing Was In Tune When I Bought It" Jones, they know it's only one song before they get to hear Mike Fletcher for a little relief. Glenn has to do the open mics the standard way because it's the way they work best - but I've been saying for years that we need to do some playing in the round every week. Another thing I like about it is that it features each song itself, I think they stand out better.
- MF : so we are better in small doses eh? hmmm what are you trying to say there big guy
- John : Song circles are my favorite. The variety keeps everybody's attention better. And the play along/sing along element lets everybody be involved the whole time. You'll notice now that more Americana artists are setting up whole shows and little tours around the song circle thing because it's entertaining. Both more entertaining to the players and to the audience. In our group it works good. We're what you'd have to call "spotty". Some of the spots like me are easier to enjoy in 3 minute doses.
- MF : Too bad... I think the song circle thing in the pool room at Rileys is pretty damn cool. We should keep that going!
- John : I don't think so Mike. I talked to my fishing buddies and it's looking like they're postponing my trip.
- MF : John, is the coast on for Wednesday with Glenn?
- John : Mike, that was a fun night last night at Riley's. The rest of us were doing good in the sing around thing but when Jimmie, Kelli and Brad get together it's like an instant choir. There's singing lead and that's a particular talent and then there's blending and they blend. When there's that strong core us other coyotes can howl and it still sounds good.

- Ann/mom : Evan, I was looking at you're uncle Russell's picture which was taken just before he & Marty got married & he wore it almost the same way as you do. Boy I sure do love you both. Happy Valentine's Day

- John : Well the conclusion of the stinky story is R.I.P. Pepé Le Pew. «link» I have no idea what drama ensued during the night but the dogs deposited him at the foot of the steps this morning. Nobody could reach under the building to save him without getting sprayed; there was nothing to be done. He came into the yard looking for a girlfriend. In case you're not aware, it's skunk mating season - they're run over all up and down Farm to Market 1102 here. You've seen the cartoons, love makes you stupid.

- Ann/mom : Son, I wrote a long message telling about "The Good Old Boys" being at Martinez tonight. I really didn't feel like going, but after talking to Deirdre I felt better. Of course I am so glad I went. I wish all the Riley guys & ya'll had been there. The Epps brothers were playing with them, and they had 3 singers that never missed a beat, one after the other. I don't compare anybody to the "Countrymen" only in saying they had an agenda & stuck to it. They sang songs I haven't heard in so lo

Jonah is so precious,but the two very best things about him is his excellent manners (except when he get overly excited) and how he loves getting presents. You could have given it to him 2 yrs ago, wrapped it up and given it again and he is just as happy. He is such a happy boy, but don’t call him that because he will inform you he is Jonah!
