I think this is where Taylor, Evan and I will be taking Dad at 10:00 in the morning. If anybody wants to go ogle some cool Volkswagens, this Day Of The Beetle would be the day. It’s free to get in. If you want to sell something or to show a car then it’s $10 to charity. Sounds very reasonable.

John : We had a real treat yesterday, Chris MacKenzie and Liliana came for a tour of The Woodzie site. Jimmie had just taken off to cut wildflowers and we were able to catch up with her and all have a nice visit at the boneyard.
John : Jimmie and I have been going out to the Woodzie site for campfires in the evenings. What wonderful weather we've had this week. I think spring is here to stay. I'm being inspired - I think I'll plant a big vegetable garden this year.
Ann/mom : I thought last night was very special. Betsy has a very sweet pure voice, and Zak is so very thrilled with everybody and being able to sing. Then the gentleman who gave me his name, and shame on me I have forgotten, but he is in from Arkansas taking turns sitting with his Mom as he has about 7 days left so Hospice has said. He is an architect & loved the looks of the Faust & couldn't believe what he found. He said he could feel our love and the vibes from everybody's enthusiasm made him want t

John : no, Mike.... I got back late and was just impossibly tired. I didn't know it was the 4th Anniversary until I read it this morning. So sorry I missed it. That's like only the 4th time I've missed in 4 years.

Malcolm : Yes, Ann, I plan on only taking home those animals I bring with me.

John : I went and looked at that and it was Elizabeth Wells Whipple who I don't believe is a direct relative to us. Mother and I were at a funeral this morning; my sister Renee's husband Randy's sister Maureen Grothues. We love all the Grothues. Maureen was very special person who we remember very fondly.

Casey : went to the Eisenhower Fleamarket today and off the highway I see this house and I go, hey I think that is my Grandad's house is that Glendora St. and sure enough it was ..... isn't that crazy that I can pick out a house that I've never been to? Anyway what a cool looking house and what a shame no one lives in it!

John : Well, Tejas had two out of the five nominations in our category in yesterday's Grammy Awards but didn't win. The 30 minutes of the broadcast I sat and watched was just awful. They really work hard to make those talented people look so stupid. Bon Jovi was ridicuous. Pink was the only cool thing I saw. The song didn't leave any impression, just the high wire and dripping water act. That was cool. She should join the circus.
John : The Cactus Cafe links U.T. with Austin's music scene. What a mistake to close it.

John : Back on the computer for a moment. Claude just finished his showcase. He filled the room and did a fantastic job. He's easily one of the coolest guys here. Jimmie, I just met somebody who remembers you from a Swindles show at Riley's. He verified it when he said you were a "spirited dancer". I've also talked to a surprising number of people who are following everything that happens with TNMC on Facebook each week and several who've played it.

John : Going with my cousin Charlie Whipple (who's closing in on 80) to visit cousin Dorothy Wimberley, (over 90), on Wednesday to mill over stories, photos and papers about our family in the early days of Wimberley, Tx. Charlie wrote a song about Wimberley that mentions Dot's grandfather Pleasant Wimberley and we're going to sing it for her. I think she'll be tickled. I'll try to get some photos.

Deirdre : All of the mountain cedar in South Texas has just landed in my sinuses in the last hour. And I haven't even gone outside. (We need a head swelling like a balloon emoticon here.)
John : thanks! We're heading over to our daughter Casey's new house in San Antonio for this year's Christmas dinner and get together. We've always done it on Christmas Eve. We'll have a big breakfast and do the kids' presents in the morning and then over to Mitch and Hillary's Christmas afternoon. Hope every body has a wonderful, peaceful and relaxing Christmas! DAP : I would also recommend Allergen Block «link» - also known as fake boogers. They help.
John : Well... the cedar pollen is starting to release. If you take something for cedar fever, start taking it now. Taylor and I take the over the counter generic Clariton from Wal-Mart. If you get the Equate two 60 count bottle package it's something like 8 cents a pill. If you take it everyday starting now you might cruise through unscathed this season.
John : No, we went once and that's enough. If they were to have it at Riley's I'd go.
Maria : congratulations on another year of Grammy nominations for Tejas, John. Not just one but two Are you going to go?

John : other than the incision, my arm looks normal for the first time in what seems like forever. I have this strange, strong taste of what I guess is the antibiotics. I'm a little unsteady but other than that... I feel pretty good. Thanks everybody for all your kindnesses while I was sick.
Jimmie : He's out of surgery and back in his room. Doing great.
Kim M : Good luck with the surgery, John. Let us know if we can do anything to help you guys. Hope those bugs give up soon so you can go home.

John : In three hours (Wed. 7:00) I'm having the surgery to clean out the part of the infection that's in my elbow. Looks like I'm going to be here until Friday.
John : It's Tuesday night, about 11:45 - I'm sitting in my hospital bed with a computer in my lap. It feels like I've been in this room forever. They took me for a wheelchair ride to x-ray yesterday. I was looking around, so excited, like a dog in the back of a pickup truck. I gotta get outta here. I think I'm gonna make a crawl for it.
John : That's the bad news Malcolm, after this I won't be able to play the piano worth a damn. Exactly the same as before.
Malcolm : That's terrific news! Now the question remains will you be able to play the piano?
John : Taylor just stopped by the hospital to check on me and I've commondeered his laptop for the rest of the day. I'm doing much better. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. I've rounded the corner and will be back on my feet in a day or two.

Casey : mom says dad is stable. they are giving him heavy duty anti-biotics... she will be staying the night with him... she went to wally world to buy some knitting materials so she should be ok too
Casey : um he doesn't want any visitors today but if he gets feeling better and he does I will post it.... right now he just wants to get feeling better
MF : How long will he stay? Is he getting visitors?
Casey : John has been admitted to North East Methodist Hospital. The infection has spread to his hand and he is now being given intervenious anti-biotics. I will post updates. Let's all hope for the best.
Jimmie : They weren't able to get anything to drain so, no culture. I marked the outer rim of the red area and it hasn't grown since this afternoon. Also, I think he's feeling better.

MF : Good. There are only a small amount of antibiotics that can kill certain bacteria, and if it's incapsulated that will keep it from spreading but hard to kill. Im glad you took him. with a broad spectrum of antibiotics should keep it from making him worse. did they do a culture to see if it's not MRSA or Staph?
DAP : Ouch! "Dug around" and "with a needle" are not pleasant to think about - I hope you were well-drugged for that.
Jimme : The infection did suddenly take a turn for the worse. I took him to the emergency room and then Tx Med Clinic. He got an injection of antibiotics and scrip for 2 addtional antibiotics and something for the pain. They think the infection is in the joint not the bursa because although she dug around, she couldn't drain it with a needle. If not better Monday we'll go to an orthopedist.
MF : it takes 24 to 48 hours for the antibiotics to kick in from when you start. If this doesn't resolve you got the wrong antibiotics and need to go back. There are many strains if bacteria. So if he ain't rocking by tomorrow yall should see a different Doc. Hang in there big John!
Jimmie : I'm keeping an eye on him, Mike. The fever went up to 101+ and I had him call the doctor. Then I had him alternate advil & tylenol and the fever finally went down. The arm is a little larger but not as hot to the touch. He feels very bad.
MF : John if you get fever with that go to the ER....that infection could go systemic...don' t mess around
John : Man, I came down super sick all of a sudden. I have an infection in my elbow of all places. They said it's probably a bad bursitis that got infected. It's huge and red and swollen. Can't seem to get the fever down. I'm sitting here half delirious hoping the antibiotics kick in pretty soon. I'm miserable.
John : perfect idea... we're going to do that!
DAP : There are 4 tiers of static, colored lights on our little prelit tree. Only tiers 2 & 4 will light. So I added a longer string of white animated lights and I'm pretending it's all intentional.
John : We're putting up the Christmas tree... trying to get the lights to work.
John : I think, although born in Rowena, she had moved to Dallas and that's where they met. There were some stories in the family about her but I don't know them. Seems like two families with girls can't live in a tiny West Texas town without knowing a little about each other.
Steve : i'm following the stories here, you know that tiny little Rowena, Texas is where Bonnie Parker lived her whole life until she took off with Clyde.
John : the plugin that creates that list will do that but I've tried it and it creates a long column of type where you can't distinguish the names. I guess there's a way to change the code to make the names bold or put a carriage return between them but I don't know how to do it. But it works the way it is, when there's a new name at the top of the list there's a new comment. Clicking takes you to it.
Art : John, do that thing where it shows the first sentence of every comment.
John : you're right, that's the key. To explain things like that we need some kind of FAQ page to clue newcomers who's who and what's what and how to get more out of the website. That's only been on the list of things for do for six years.
Mary : i first came from a link to the ducks post but I love this site. A lot goes on every week and I don't quite know who's who - It's like a texas internet reality show. I just found the "recent comments" nested in the sidebar. THAT is making it easier to stay up with the comments.
John : it crept down to 22 degrees.... for us South Texas cold wimps, that's like sub-zero.
John : well, there was a little snow in New Braunfels today. Evan saw it at school and said it was the largest, fluffiest flakes he'd seen in his life. We've battened down the hatches here. Turned the well pump off and opened all the hydrants, let all three giant German Shepherds in the house and got the plants in a closed area with a space heater blastin'. We're as ready for 25 degrees as we can get.
John : wouldn't it be nice to have a reading every time? We make the rules... let's make that rule!

John : even though we were missing Mother and Deirdre last night... that was a great Thursday Night Music Club. Lots of highlights but one for me was Susan Whipple reading one of Charlie's stories.

John : we had a good Thanksgiving. Spent Thursday with our kids, my mom and dad and Jimmie's side of the family and yesterday with Smith and Davis cousins from the Whipple side. It's like we've been members of a professional eating team.

John : I heard on the news that the beefcake movie made $140,000,000 in the first four days. All but just a little of it from women. Highest first weekend gross in history. And they say it's terrible. Silly girls, with $140 million you could have negotiated a worldwide group rate at Chippendale's.

John : well here it is... Thanksgiving week. Whether we're ready of it or not, welcome to The Holiday Season 2009! This one has the benefit of Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve all falling on Thursdays so lots of people are going to get three, four day mini-vacations really close together.
John : don't make the news just report it. Remember, it wasn't cheese it was cheeseCAKE. ....I really have no idea.
Jackie : how is it that women are cheese and men get to be beef? Cheese?
John : You just removed an item off the almost infinite list of things I don't know.

John : It's such a ridiculous word. It's origin, of course, is the masculine from of Cheesecake. How did people come up with the word Cheesecake to describe provocative female poses? It's like it was already weird so Beefcake was just another big step in that weird direction. Right?

John : Spam is a reality we have to live with. Even FaceBook now is getting attacked like crazy. But we had a little spam hacker attack here over the last few days. It wasn't anything that spread or was of any danger, just a nuisance. Our guardian angel Gretchen fixed it but we are changing some passwords so about half of you may get an email from the site with a new password. If you don't, don't worry about it and keep using what you have.

Ann Pattillo : I was saying that to have groceries delivered on a regular basis was too expensive, and she had to charge so much that even the local people couldn't support the store. Ann Pattillo : It is hard to believe that while I was growing up "Baker's store" took care of Choate 's people. We had a charge account for groceries, and when Mama got paid, she paid them. My Aunt "Neen" for Maudine, was mama's sister. She married Charlie Bradfute and moved to Choate and leased the store. John : we went back down there this morning and helped pick up their gear. They said they were cold but fine. Taylor says the whole campout experience was just what he wanted.
John : we had a very relaxing evening on the river. Picture perfect day for sitting around a fire by the river. Taylor and Evan and a bunch of his friends stayed overnight in our big tent... I bet they froze. It went down to 47 degrees and us Whipples think we're going to die under 50, 47 to a Texan is 9 below to a Yankee. I told them it was going to cold but they kept saying they'd be o.k. I think all they took was the sheets off their beds.
John : well I got news for everybody... it's swimming weather. Jimmie, Taylor and Evan and I are going to be in the Comal River, Texas River Heaven, in about 30 minutes and if you aren't then you only have yourself to blame. We have the spot reserved all day and all night so drive up if you suddenly need salvation.

John : I agree. Jon Hogan intends to hit a nerve - on any given night some people will be in the mood for that and some won't but that's what happens when you swing for the fence. I loved it. Their song "The Train Doesn't Stop In My Town Anymore" was one of the most surprisingly good live performances I've seen in a long time. And you could tell they loved the response they got. You have to admit, the TNMC crowd is a great audience to play for. They're coming back on Nov. 12th with a standup bass player. Advice to those who come every couple of weeks.... don't miss that week.

John : the little rock festival last night was pretty wild. Carrie Ann was a very good host. We visited with her but didn't get to see her play because she was scheduled for 8:00 but by midnight she hadn't gone on, We couldn't stay to play around the campfires because we were just tuckered out. There were lots of tents but I'm afraid also lots of rain this morning. Everybody there was totally into it so I'm sure it all worked out in the end. I'm glad we didn't camp, we'd be wringing out our bloomers.

DAP : Stopped at the cemetery in Eola and took some photos of our grandfather's (Archie W. Seal) headstone. Trying to figure out how to get them off my phone considering both the USB and Bluetooth connections are broken . . .
John : The deal where fans can take an ocean cruise with a couple of famous musicans has been going on for years. Doing that same kind of thing on a train would have to be cheaper and more like roll n' roll. I know they'll rent whole cars, I wonder how that works?

John : well, Evan played four songs at Riley's tonight and he was very good again. I think he has arrived.

John : Well, the effort put into Thursday Night Music Club paid off big again. It's a safe place for people to play. Evan got up for the first time and blew our minds. I've been aware of his progress with his guitar playing and know he has a good voice but last night was the first time the two came together in front of a microphone. I'm so proud of him. Last night was a milestone, the beginning of his singer/songwriter life. He's going to be really, really good.
John : Hey, don't forget Thursday Night Music Club tonight. I'm looking forward a laid back version of it after two weeks of having people packed in. John : Jay Perez has been on our label for a couple of records, he's going to Washington to sing in front of President Obama next week. One time Elida sang for a Bill Clinton event and Jimmie got to go as a Tejas representative and shook hands with Clinton. I'm sure Jay will knock 'em out, he's a great performer. We'll see if it helps record sales.
John : yeah Deirdre, it's been raining off and on, mostly on, for 24 hours now. They say we could have a fall full of floods like in 1998. That makes everybody up here in New Braunfels nested in between all these rivers and creeks really nervous. But for right now... it's wonderful. Just one day of rain and all the leaves have already greened up.
DAP : Glorious rain! Thank goodness for "real water" as Daddy would say. We've been running our soaker hose all summer long just so we can strongarm open the front door; one good soaking rain and it opens as easy as anything.
John : It rained beautifully for several hours. And it was 76 degrees at 1 in the afternoon. It had been hitting 105. This is the beginning of the end of Heatwave '09.
John : Yeah, Karen the next week might be our week for rain. Chances are up in the 60% for tomorrow.
John : Although Charlie was been successful at many things, I think writing is his calling.

John : Terry is an old friend. He's taught a bunch of aspiring guitarists, maybe 50 or more, at San Antonio College each semester. That doesn't sound like a lot. But he's done that two semesters a year for 35 years. Thousands of students. I just really like him. He's made an important lifelong contribution.
Malcolm : It turns out a good friend of mine took Senor Muska's class a decade or two ago. Go figure!
John : I loved last night. Having Terry Muska there; to many he's the most respected guitarist in San Antonio. That was just awesome.

John : I don't know anything about Explorer anymore. Is 7 the newest version? All I ask people to do is install Firefox, websites like ours and hundreds of others have to have it to work right. AND.. thanks for the compliments. We are working on speeding it up. Just a little longer....

Guest_1693 : John, works perfectly in Firefox but not at all in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. Songs play great (very nice by the way) but Infinite Scroll just says "you have reached the end of the Internet". Funny line but I don't think it's true.
John : I got the plugin updated. Keep scrolling down the page to try to get to the bottom post. It'll go for six years. If you want, you can play with that little trick while the you listen to the music for the day. Music should keep playing. I was able to scan back more than a year by the end of the songs. Time travel.
John : Thursday Night Music Club was really unique last night. First... Jimmie pointed out that we had our 25th anniversary. Done it 25 weeks in a row. Is it our "stick to it tive ness" or our hardheadness? Anyway we broke form and played like a band all night. Song swapped for hours. We had a serious dulcimer player from Johnson City playing on every song. It was kinda solemn being the week of Roy's passing. But it was healing.
John : Evan was a half a credit short of what he needed for 10th grade so we had him take an online course from Texas Tech. John : we had another spike in hits on the blog this week. This time it was David Priest's info on the meteor shower. A ton of people came to that post to get their news about it. It just all depends on what Google does. Google sees each post here as it's own webpage and that one got a high page rank on a topic that was big for several days. It's interesting how it works. Whippleworld has been around for so many years that it gets it's share of notice.
DAP : Les Paul passed away at 94.
John : Brad won tickets to the live Roots And Branches of Americana radio show in Gruene and gave them to us. So we spent the evening with Mr. Ray Wylie Hubbard. It was great.
John : heading up to Riley's to play with Glenn. We're there until midnight if anybody's lookin' for a taste of old time Texas.

Ann Pattillo : I must share my good news. My Dr. says I am a cancer survivor & my prescription is to be happy. I told him some of my friends constantly talk about losing weight & I've gained, he said smile at them & say well "I'm a cancer survivor"

John : Up to the minute word is that Uncle Mitchy is doing fine. Hillary and Jimmie's correspondence of 10 minutes ago indicates Mitch can now tell he already has more flexibility without the metal. Mitch's life is constantly monitored by females. Like mine and yours I guess.
Ann Pattillo : Best of everything, Mitch. May the surgeon do his best work ever! Sending lots of love and wishes of a speedy recovery.
John : I heard from Hillary earlier today and she had Mitch in the car headed home. He's sore.
John : Evan is staying with them for a few days to help however he can.
John : Hillary has sent some updates on Mitch, most of you probably haven't seen them. He's getting ready to go in for the surgery to have the pins taken out of his leg. We appreciate everybody wishing him well.
John : It was fun last night Mike. That's a nice coffee house gig - very folky.

John : I don't want to carry in an extra 90 pounds every week Mike but... playing the acoustic guitar through that old Fender tube amp made that whole vibe happen. It's not just that it changes the tone of the guitar, it pumps up the whole performance. We need a little Fender Deluxe or something.
