“For Everything There Is A Season…”

Ecclesiastes 3
(Except at the supermarket)
Cold storage and air freight have made it possible for local supermarket produce sections to have grapes, plums and peaches from Chile in the winter and navel oranges from South Africa in the summer. This is yet another example of the desire by many for immediate gratification. Why wait for something you like when you can enjoy it now!
Just think of how far we have progressed from planting a peach pit, waiting several years for it to grow large enough to start bearing peaches and then having the peaches for only a couple of weeks in the summer!
Yet, there is a tradeoff here. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In this case it is gaining the pleasure of immediate gratification but losing the pleasure of anticipation.
I submit that the pleasure of anticipation always outweighs the pleasure of immediate gratification.
Yes, there is pleasure in looking forward to things in their seasons. And, who can deny the luscious sensation of biting into a warm, juicy, sweet peach just plucked from a tree as opposed to a peach picked still hard and green from a tree in Chile?
P.S. To make my case, in this season what is the prime example of “anticipation”– it is CHRISTMAS!
Merry Christmas everybody.
