John : We're in New Mexico and are only getting phone and Internet connections every now and then. Having a great time, a couple of more days and we'll be home.
John : well thanks. You made me look and yeah, this past Sunday was the 7th Anniversary of this family and friends website. Most don't last long so in website years that's like being 90.
Aston : I have been sampling at random back to 2003 and am amazed you have archives with daily posts back seven years. It represents much effort.
John : My sister Renee and I are, I guess, the people who talk about the structure (old and decrepit) and function of the blog the most. We've talked about little sidebar ads but that sounds like work. No, no agenda or motive it's just us chickens.
Steve : here's a plug for unsupervised learning. «link» Even back when schools were better, wouldn't you agree that only the tiniest fraction of what we all learned was supervised. And not ANY of the really good stuff.
Aston : I enjoy the site. I don't know exactly what group this is. Because there are no adverts I assume it is not commercial. Is the connection that you are members of a group?
John : Evan's at Matt's with the camera making movies. I didn't ask what of but I'm sure I'm going to find out.
John : This week Jimmie and I will be the special musical guests. We have some new songs to air out.
Steve : we're quite a ways away but we'd like to come play the Thurs. Nite Music Club. Maybe soon.
John : Use "Thursday Night Music Club" as the search. Not "The Faust" or anything because it's not where it was before, it's at Oma's Underground in Gruene. John : I would have to record it. Isn't it funny how I've spent my life in the recording business but I have a block. I don't know why. I need to go to a psychiatrist.

John : I think she's married with children in Dallas.
Sandra : Do you ever see Janet? What ever happened to her?
John : Jimmie and I are still going strong since 1973. That's 37 years. I remain naïve, she effectively guards the fence line. One reason we've had such a long and successful marriage.
Sandra : I know who you're talking about. She walked around playing the recorder? I just remember that you and Janet were the sweetest hippie couple at Roosevelt. The matching elephant bell pants with all the patches. You guys were like the prince and princess of that whole scene. I wish you had called me.
John : no, I married Jim. There were things about me my high school friends didn't know.
Sandra : so did you marry Janet Brantley?
John : that's my Dad who was posting about that. Yeah, those 100' tall high tension electrical distribution towers went just about over our house. Specially when the humidity was high each wire would hum so loud it was like a choir. Even to this day I can light a fluorescent tube just by stepping near it. Nice to hear from you. I'm fine. Married. One kid out of college, one in and one a junior in high school.
Sandra : I don't think you need to worry about cell phones. I was at your house back in high school, didn't you live under those giant electrical power lines?

John : we seem to be up and running again
John : If anybody's been trying to call, our Time Warner modem is acting up. The rain last night caused a power outage and maybe a surge. Internet's been up and down.

John : I'm incredibly behind on answering emails and returning calls this week. If you're waiting on me.... sorry. I should be better over the weekend and next week.
John : Dubya never asked me over for a bbq so I'm not sure how close we are.
Art : you got your buddy George W. to thank for the predominance of performance testing. Started in Texas and then went coast to coast.
John : yeah but don't they create those TAKS and other tests based on the contents of the textbooks? They teach to those tests, it's almost all they do. Local school districts' funding is tied up in their performance on it.
Art : that whole political textbook thing is silly in a way. Ask your kids, classes now are rarely taught by the chapter out of text books. The change away from text books has really already happened. Computers are involved in every subject.
John : think of that in context of the recent firestorm of controversy about textbooks. Could a school district or even teachers edit in and out what they wanted? Hmmmm...
Art : if the iPad could replace text books in schools think of all the money that would be saved «link»
John : first the boys went up to Austin for the early evening and then back through New Braunfels into San Antonio for the 3D iMax midnight premeire of Toy Story 3. I haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, they'll probably sleep until 2. Hope the movie was good.
John : This will be a really nice Thursday Night Music Club. If you've been meaning to come, do it this week.

Jimmie : Rusty is doing very well, in rehab, going home in a few weeks. Amazing recovery!

John : That was me, last night... I didn't know Jimmie was logged on. ANYWAY... it flooded along the river really bad up here. And the roads were mostly closed this morning. Evan was spending the night at Matt's who's house is near the Guadalupe and the houses right across the street were under water. But it has receded and everybody here in the family is fine now.
Jimmie : What a thunderstorm!
John : we're on the same page there Mike. We got her to the doctor right away. He switched her to a much stronger antibiotic and it seems to be knocking it out. She's doing much better and is actually back at work this morning. But it was a tough four days.

John : poor Jimmie, she's having her worse swelling today. I reached the doctor at home and got him to switch to a much stronger antibiotic just in case. We're concerned because the swelling is all the way around her eye now. We know not to take the chance of infection lightly. But you should see her, she looks pitiful.

John : Jimmie's still hurting pretty bad but doing good. Another day of pampering and I think she'll start getting back to normal. I'm enjoying taking care of her.
John : Got Jimmie home. She was in there all morning. The oral surgeon seems to be a really thorough guy and he said he was able to do exactly what needed to be done. That was the problem before, just couldn't do it going from the crown towards the roots had to cut in from the other way. But this should get rid of the nagging tooth pain she's had.
John : Jim Bell is having oral surgery this morning. She hates going to the dentist for even minor things and here she is having to have some of the worst kind of dental work. But the boys and I are going to take good care of her this weekend.

John : I got up on this beautiful morning after the incredible thunderstorm last night and the trees are full of tens of thousands of something making a huge racket. Sounds like frogs but they're way up in the trees. For as far as you can hear. It's scary loud. What a great storm last night. Rolling Texas thunder for hours. I love it.

John : as is their tradition, Evan's best friend Matt is spending the first week of summer with us. Evan, Matt and Taylor turned the living room into a mancave while Jimmie and I were out in Kerrville. At this point I've written the living room off and am just trying to defend the kitchen.
John : we're back home now. That was like a vacation, wonderful. As you could see Jimmie tapped her iPad into a little WiFi at Pleasant Valley Ranch. It was slooooow but it was live. Go to Kerrville if you can, it's great. What happens on the main stage is nothing, it all happens at song circles people host in the tent and RV village. It's like a hundred house concerts going on, one at each house in a big subdivision. And you walk from circle to circle. Some of it is awful but a lot of it is brillia
John : OK..... All you guys that kept telling us over the years to come do the campground song circles here at Kerrville were right. Jimmie and I were up until 4:00 in the morning singing our little hearts out.

John : those are wild. Hey... we did go visit Rusty and had a long talk with him. He's much more stable than I expected. He's got a long haul ahead of him but he's determined to make the best of it.

John : back from a weekend in Austin with the Webbs. Matt and Winona were such kind hosts. Great to see Becky and Tom, Cassell and Craig, Mitch and Hillary, Jack and the girls, The Taylors... and everybody else. The whole thing was a really nice time. All our kids were there last night. It's particularly important to Jimmie to get this time with her sisters.

John : There's going to be a nice Webb family reunion in Austin at Winona's this Saturday. Cassell and Craig will be here from England, Becky and Tom from California and of course Jimmie and I and Mitch and Hillary are here already... Winona is going to have the complete set of all her Aunts and Uncles at her house at one time. We're really looking forward to it.
John : Winona is doing such a great job of keeping everybody informed on Rusty's condition via email. The news in each day's update gets better and better. It's amazing that he has survived this far. He's a fighter.

Karen in Hawaii : Jimmie, will be praying for Rusty.
John : Jimmie and I are back. Including taking our time and staying relaxed getting down there and back, it was a four day trip. We only stayed one night on the beach. We did a lot of moving around. Went to some nice restaurants. Walked on peirs and jetties. Went to the annual Nautical Fleamarket - we were just lucky to run into that. We met some nice people which seems to happen more when walking the dogs. It felt like a looooong trip for just four days. And we really needed it.

John : Jimmie and are headed down to the Padre Island National Seashore for another honeymoon. Taking two German shepherds and leaving one plus two boys to guard the house. See you guys later.
Steve : most San Antonians believe the Spurs didn't try hard to win in Dallas so they could close it out at home. I'm not saying what I think except that a WHOLE lot more money was made playing that last game at home.
John : I think Mitch has said that he's made money with CD Baby. Why not record your single best song and put it up there? People, and you guys know who you are, who wait two and three and four years between making new records might want to go into the making singles business. And then when you have done 10, burn them on one offs CDs and sell them at shows.
John : I try to keep up with this blog and Monday's post talks a little about the new CD Baby single policy. Looks like it's just one time 9 clams. FYI... it's a great all around music business blog if you do RSS. «link»

Steve : CD Baby has changed their policy and you don't have to have released a complete CD anymore. You can now record one song and submit to them and they will make it available through their service and only charge a one time $9 fee and then 9% of each sale.

John : Jimmie bought a big pork roast and it's cookin' in a brown sugar/Dijon mustard glaze right now. We're bringing that and mashed potatoes to The Thursday Night Music Club. We need some eaters. Can you eat?
John : A.J., that used to be true but a recording contract in 2010 is the spleen of whoever's financing it dangling with a fishook in it. There'd be plenty of takers if any spleens were left. I know mine are gone.

John : I'm gonna sell them some shrimp.... with a hook in it. And I'm going with Chano from CE Distributors. We're riding together so we'll talk a little business down there and back. I've been fishing for redfish for years now, this will be a trip after big trout. The guide called and said they're out there and that tomorrow would be the day.
Art : Are you doing business with fish now, John? They buy many CDs?
John : I'm leaving on a business/pleasure fishing trip, be back Thursday for TNMC. Y'all make plans to follow Dale up to New Braunfels.

John : You're very welcome. Thank you for coming. MAN... Jimmie and I and a few of our buddies played a little show at San Marcos yesterday. Jimmie and I have become devoted to playing together now. We played our songs and sat and visited in what turned out to be the bright sunshine... and each got a crisp new hundred bill. It's not that the money is a big deal, it's just special to us that we got it for playing. It wasn't that different from TNMC. Except the hundred bill part.
Paul : ditto. we'll be there next year!!
Melissa : Thanks again for The Woodzie John. You have the nicest family and friends. We had the very best time and we'll never, ever miss one. Thank you for letting us be there.
John : ....a hectic couple of days. Taylor's car broke down and I've been ferrying him back and forth to San Antonio College. He got his first experience hunting car parts down at a junk yard today. He paid $85 for the parts instead of $345 and he was thrilled. Plus we got to race up and down the aisles between the cars in two 4 wheelers. We were chasing the junk yard goats. It was great.
John : I wanna thank everybody for all the phone calls about the Woodzie. I've been getting them just about non-stop since Sunday. You're welcome. And thank you.
Ann/mom : I have to say that this Woodzie was just wonderful. I brought a neighbor, who had a friend in from Boise, Idaho and she says she wants to come back next year. On Monday morning I brought Deirdre back to the Woodzie site to get her car and I was wishing we could do it again! Everything was still so beautiful.

John : well like I say the next day every year... the Woodzie occured! Saying "a happening" is one thing, the Woodzie is "an occurrence". One step up from a happening. It was great. John : There's a whole gaggle of us out at the Woodzie site. It's looking really, really good. Everybody is as happy as a little kid on vacation. That's the magic of The Woodzie. Drive out here and hang with us tonight if you want to. When Butch Morgan gets here I bet a song circle is gonna break out.
John : Jimmie took today and tomorrow off so she'll have four days of Woodzie vacation!! We're hitting the preperation of the campsites really hard. It's going to be close timewise but I think we'll have it really nice by Saturday. Jimmie's favorite thing in the world is working in her woods so she's very, very happy.

John : Mother, you do have those talents you just need to start singing and playing some percussion stuff. I don't know of anybody who has more music in them than you. It's in every cell of your body.
Ann/mom : I keep wondering why don't I have any of those talents?
Ann/mom : I am trying to figure out how you can go to TNMC and not smile! Just the joy of anticipation and seeing, and meeting other people is enough for me. But then..knowing someone is going to just bowl you over with a song is such a gift. Lawrence harmonizes so beautifully and enjoys it so much. I thnk I live for TNMC, in the sense of looking forward to being with so many wonderful friends and of course family.
John : it was so nice to see Tyler having so much fun. Didn't she sound great? Last night's TNMC had it's share of oddities but it was overall very good. Everybody seemed to enjoy singing even more than usual, it wasn't a laid back night... everybody was belting it out.
Jimmie : Big night at Thursday Night Music Club tomorrow for Tyler's b-day. Hope to see you there!

John : Now it's Sunday night. Time is flying. The Susan Gibson songwriting workshop went well. After that Jimmie and I drove all the way to Devine, Texas for Claude Morgan's house warming party. He's been rebuilding that house for years and it's finally done. We saw some interesting people, played a little music and had a great time. Claude said to say hello to everybody and that he'll see ya at The Woodzie this year for sure.
John : ...now it's Friday and it's gorgeous. Caught a little bit of the weather on TV ... looks like an almost perfect week this week.

John : Another rainy day, this has been one of the rainiest winter/early springs I can remember. But the weather report says we'll have a perfect night for the Tejas Party. A cool, dry night in downtown San Antonio... I'm thinking it's going to be good.

John : Yeah, it's the 10th. Are you guys coming to the Tejas Party next week? Friday the 19th. Everybody is invited to a big old night full of San Antonio Tex-Mex music tradition.

John : We had a real treat yesterday, Chris MacKenzie and Liliana came for a tour of The Woodzie site. Jimmie had just taken off to cut wildflowers and we were able to catch up with her and all have a nice visit at the boneyard.
John : Jimmie and I have been going out to the Woodzie site for campfires in the evenings. What wonderful weather we've had this week. I think spring is here to stay. I'm being inspired - I think I'll plant a big vegetable garden this year.
Ann/mom : I thought last night was very special. Betsy has a very sweet pure voice, and Zak is so very thrilled with everybody and being able to sing. Then the gentleman who gave me his name, and shame on me I have forgotten, but he is in from Arkansas taking turns sitting with his Mom as he has about 7 days left so Hospice has said. John : no, Mike.... I got back late and was just impossibly tired. I didn't know it was the 4th Anniversary until I read it this morning. So sorry I missed it. That's like only the 4th time I've missed in 4 years.

John : I went and looked at that and it was Elizabeth Wells Whipple who I don't believe is a direct relative to us. Mother and I were at a funeral this morning; my sister Renee's husband Randy's sister Maureen Grothues. We love all the Grothues. Maureen was very special person who we remember very fondly.

John : Well, Tejas had two out of the five nominations in our category in yesterday's Grammy Awards but didn't win. The 30 minutes of the broadcast I sat and watched was just awful. They really work hard to make those talented people look so stupid. Bon Jovi was ridicuous. Pink was the only cool thing I saw. The song didn't leave any impression, just the high wire and dripping water act. That was cool. She should join the circus.
John : The Cactus Cafe links U.T. with Austin's music scene. What a mistake to close it.

I've also talked to a surprising number of people who are following everything that happens with TNMC on Facebook each week and several who've played it.

John : Going with my cousin Charlie Whipple (who's closing in on 80) to visit cousin Dorothy Wimberley, (over 90), on Wednesday to mill over stories, photos and papers about our family in the early days of Wimberley, Tx. Charlie wrote a song about Wimberley that mentions Dot's grandfather Pleasant Wimberley and we're going to sing it for her. I think she'll be tickled. I'll try to get some photos.

John : thanks! We're heading over to our daughter Casey's new house in San Antonio for this year's Christmas dinner and get together. We've always done it on Christmas Eve. John : Well... the cedar pollen is starting to release. If you take something for cedar fever, start taking it now. Taylor and I take the over the counter generic Clariton from Wal-Mart. If you get the Equate two 60 count bottle package it's something like 8 cents a pill. If you take it everyday starting now you might cruise through unscathed this season.
John : No, we went once and that's enough. If they were to have it at Riley's I'd go.

John : other than the incision, my arm looks normal for the first time in what seems like forever. I have this strange, strong taste of what I guess is the antibiotics. I'm a little unsteady but other than that... I feel pretty good. Thanks everybody for all your kindnesses while I was sick.
Jimmie : He's out of surgery and back in his room. Doing great.

John : In three hours (Wed. 7:00) I'm having the surgery to clean out the part of the infection that's in my elbow. Looks like I'm going to be here until Friday.
John : It's Tuesday night, about 11:45 - I'm sitting in my hospital bed with a computer in my lap. It feels like I've been in this room forever. They took me for a wheelchair ride to x-ray yesterday. I was looking around, so excited, like a dog in the back of a pickup truck. I gotta get outta here. I think I'm gonna make a crawl for it.
John : That's the bad news Malcolm, after this I won't be able to play the piano worth a damn. Exactly the same as before.

John : Taylor just stopped by the hospital to check on me and I've commondeered his laptop for the rest of the day. I'm doing much better. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. I've rounded the corner and will be back on my feet in a day or two.

Casey : John has been admitted to North East Methodist Hospital. The infection has spread to his hand and he is now being given intervenious anti-biotics. I will post updates. Let's all hope for the best.
Jimmie : They weren't able to get anything to drain so, no culture. I marked the outer rim of the red area and it hasn't grown since this afternoon. Also, I think he's feeling better.

MF : Good. There are only a small amount of antibiotics that can kill certain bacteria, and if it's incapsulated that will keep it from spreading but hard to kill. Im glad you took him. with a broad spectrum of antibiotics should keep it from making him worse. did they do a culture to see if it's not MRSA or Staph?
DAP : Ouch! "Dug around" and "with a needle" are not pleasant to think about - I hope you were well-drugged for that.
Jimme : The infection did suddenly take a turn for the worse. I took him to the emergency room and then Tx Med Clinic. He got an injection of antibiotics and scrip for 2 addtional antibiotics and something for the pain. They think the infection is in the joint not the bursa because although she dug around, she couldn't drain it with a needle. If not better Monday we'll go to an orthopedist.
MF : it takes 24 to 48 hours for the antibiotics to kick in from when you start. If this doesn't resolve you got the wrong antibiotics and need to go back. There are many strains if bacteria. So if he ain't rocking by tomorrow yall should see a different Doc. Hang in there big John!
Jimmie : I'm keeping an eye on him, Mike. The fever went up to 101+ and I had him call the doctor. Then I had him alternate advil & tylenol and the fever finally went down. The arm is a little larger but not as hot to the touch. He feels very bad.
MF : John if you get fever with that go to the ER....that infection could go systemic...don' t mess around
John : Man, I came down super sick all of a sudden. I have an infection in my elbow of all places. They said it's probably a bad bursitis that got infected. It's huge and red and swollen. Can't seem to get the fever down. I'm sitting here half delirious hoping the antibiotics kick in pretty soon. I'm miserable.
John : perfect idea... we're going to do that!
DAP : There are 4 tiers of static, colored lights on our little prelit tree. Only tiers 2 & 4 will light. So I added a longer string of white animated lights and I'm pretending it's all intentional.
John : We're putting up the Christmas tree... trying to get the lights to work.
John : I think, although born in Rowena, she had moved to Dallas and that's where they met. There were some stories in the family about her but I don't know them. Seems like two families with girls can't live in a tiny West Texas town without knowing a little about each other.
Steve : i'm following the stories here, you know that tiny little Rowena, Texas is where Bonnie Parker lived her whole life until she took off with Clyde.
John : the plugin that creates that list will do that but I've tried it and it creates a long column of type where you can't distinguish the names. I guess there's a way to change the code to make the names bold or put a carriage return between them but I don't know how to do it. But it works the way it is, when there's a new name at the top of the list there's a new comment. Clicking takes you to it.
Art : John, do that thing where it shows the first sentence of every comment.
John : you're right, that's the key. To explain things like that we need some kind of FAQ page to clue newcomers who's who and what's what and how to get more out of the website. That's only been on the list of things for do for six years.
Mary : i first came from a link to the ducks post but I love this site. A lot goes on every week and I don't quite know who's who - It's like a texas internet reality show. I just found the "recent comments" nested in the sidebar. THAT is making it easier to stay up with the comments.
John : it crept down to 22 degrees.... for us South Texas cold wimps, that's like sub-zero.
John : well, there was a little snow in New Braunfels today. Evan saw it at school and said it was the largest, fluffiest flakes he'd seen in his life. We've battened down the hatches here. Turned the well pump off and opened all the hydrants, let all three giant German Shepherds in the house and got the plants in a closed area with a space heater blastin'. We're as ready for 25 degrees as we can get.

John : I heard on the news that the beefcake movie made $140,000,000 in the first four days. All but just a little of it from women. Highest first weekend gross in history. And they say it's terrible. Silly girls, with $140 million you could have negotiated a worldwide group rate at Chippendale's.
Steve : a picture like that of fat guys like us wouldn't be beefcake they'd be beercake.
John : well here it is... Thanksgiving week. Whether we're ready of it or not, welcome to The Holiday Season 2009! This one has the benefit of Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve all falling on Thursdays so lots of people are going to get three, four day mini-vacations really close together.
John : don't make the news just report it. Remember, it wasn't cheese it was cheeseCAKE. ....I really have no idea.
Jackie : how is it that women are cheese and men get to be beef? Cheese?
John : You just removed an item off the almost infinite list of things I don't know.
Michael : proof number zillion that it's a small world. Joe Walsh is Ringo Starr's brother-in-law. Bet you didn't know that.
Steve : Is it raining in north Whippleworld? It's soaking here in south Whippleworld.
John : It's such a ridiculous word. It's origin, of course, is the masculine from of Cheesecake. How did people come up with the word Cheesecake to describe provocative female poses? It's like it was already weird so Beefcake was just another big step in that weird direction. Right?
Tyler Archer : Wow when's the last time the word Beefcake was thrown around...

John : Spam is a reality we have to live with. Even FaceBook now is getting attacked like crazy. But we had a little spam hacker attack here over the last few days. It wasn't anything that spread or was of any danger, just a nuisance. Our guardian angel Gretchen fixed it but we are changing some passwords so about half of you may get an email from the site with a new password. If you don't, don't worry about it and keep using what you have.

Ann Pattillo : I was saying that to have groceries delivered on a regular basis was too expensive, and she had to charge so much that even the local people couldn't support the store. Ann Pattillo : It is hard to believe that while I was growing up "Baker's store" took care of Choate 's people. We had a charge account for groceries, and when Mama got paid, she paid them. My Aunt "Neen" for Maudine, was mama's sister. She married Charlie Bradfute and moved to Choate and leased the store.
