Tyler turning 25, Evan turning 16…. it’s a big week.
Evan got a flat screen TV for his birthday. We’re taking him out to a special dinner tonight, he has a date with his girlfriend planned and also a party with his friends. His family party will be this Saturday at Casey’s house. Please come if you can. A kid only turns 16 once.
She turned 25 today and she has celebrations scheduled for days. There’ll be a big party for her this Thursday at Thursday Night Music Club – be sure to come. In the meantime…. wish her a Happy Birthweek!
We’ve all enjoyed spending more time and staying in better contact with our Smith cousins these last couple of years. I’m encouraging as many of them as possible to come to The Woodzie this year. Raymond Smith surely fit right in to the hippie camper crowd. What would Uncle Lester think? 
John Sr. and Raymond Smith are first cousins. Dad, of course, is my grandfather’s son and Raymond is granddad’s sister Virginia’s son. Raymond was named after Granddad. Kevin, with the big deep voice who you saw play on stage and in the song circle is Raymond’s son. You probably also saw Evan and his buddies running around the woods being tough and cool and young. Dad and Raymond were running around San Antonio like that but at the other end of a lifetime. It takes a Woodzie to get them back together, camping out and being wild. They each went to Taylor at different times and independently picked out the only two red shirts exactly like these…. looks like their tastes run about the same.

I’m excited about this. Gilbert says he’ll again lend us the largest bar-b-que pit in the cosmos. Go to HEB and bring a whole Tyrannosaurus Rex, I’ll cook it. This photo from last year doesn’t do it justice, it’s huge. That trailer is big enough to haul a full size truck.
I still love this little slideshow from a couple of years ago. It has Sissy in it and Leo and the Super Happy Fun Landers. I put it after the “more” button because it’s a bunch of photos that add up to a pretty large load.

This is only one of the hundreds of old monthly magazines I enjoyed in my 1965 to 1975 era of mechanical things. I had collected them in my 1955 to 1965 era, but threw them away and swore I would never do that again. …and here I am again. I filled several trash barrels glancing at them one by one as they passed into never ever land until I got to this one.
This is a BD5 and hot in the minds of dreamers wanting to fly cheap and fast. 215mph. That is three times faster than a J3 Piper Cub which when it came out in the mid 1940’s very popular and safe and only cost $750 and you did not have to build it. It had a Continental A65 engine and it was a two place vehicle people traveled from coast to coast very safely. It could dead stick a 3 point landing as well as it could power land. A lovable aircraft!
The BD5 was not a forgiving airplane and most of them killed their owners or wound up as a pipe dream hanging from the rafters in the garage.remaining as a symbol of being smart enough not to fly it.
I lost a good friend who tried and died. Maybe he saved my life! I liked the concept of the BD5 but it ends there. I’m going to toss it tomorrow.

I have been going by my house sorting memories and cleaning up things and you know me I don’t want to throw anything away, but, there comes a time to put your house in some kind of realistic understanding and order. It is really a very blessed unique place.
I came across some little things like this grade slip from St. Philips where I attended only one semester but look at the ” 9″ grade points which is an “A” in college which was in engineering drawing.
During that semester I drew every plate in the book all labeled and numbered by hand finished and turned in for grading. Over 200 of them. Some pretty complex.
The instructor, Mr. Redding told me himself that he had never seen anything like it. He had been teaching for many years and had never given an “A” before except when when grading on a curve, and he can’t do that because it would fail everyone else in the class.
The secret was I did not use a LEROY for lettering. . . .I hand lettered just like my dad did with a uniform slight slant and a perfect grey tone letter spacing. I could do it as fast as I could write.

This is a photograph that is very precious, specially to my mother. That’s her, that’s baby Ann/Mom being held by her Dad. There are very few photographs of him. And that’s her mother Evelyn who, at the other end of her lifetime, is the Baby Doll in one of my songs. Mother’s dad is a grandfather none of his grandchildren had the chance to know. He died extremely young – something like seven years after this photo. Two epidemics ravaged America and Texas early in the century, polio and tuberculosis and both epidemics radically affected our families. My father’s father had polio but survived and my mother’s father had tuberculosis and did not.
I think you can tell by looking at her in this photo, my Grandma was a strong and amazing person. She lived a hard life in a hard part of Texas, she truly did hold onto Old Time Texas longer than any other person I ever knew.
