  • John : we're hanging out in Winona's house. Playing with her big, fat cat and watching her big screen TV. Living large. We were going non-stop yesterday but we're relaxing this morning. Going to the art museum this afternoon. We're treating this like a tourist trip to some distant destination.

  • John : I feel for ya. I've had my kids get sudden wild rashes from head to toe and weird infections and delirious fevers; it's the scariest thing there is. BUT they ended up being fine every time. I bet that's what will happen with your daughter. A week from now it'll be in the rear view mirror.

  • John : No, I wasn't at Krause Spings. If your kid has an infected area get her to a doctor right away. They can tell pretty quick. It's probably not what you fear but any infection can get serious really fast.

  • Steve : We're a little far but I'd come see a hot shot entrepreneur like you playing for tips. you'll probably franchise it.
  • John : That was quick...we found a great place to play. It's The Green Onion just a few miles from the house - actually on the same road Oma's is on. It's a moderately upscale restaurant kinda geared for the wine lover crowd. They have a narrow little martini bar at the side and that's where we'll be most every Saturday playing for tips and payin' our dues. For a while. We're gonna start the week after Labor Day.
  • John : can't kick me out of the band... I own the P.A.
  • John : Here's the deal... the guitar playing is OK and the songs are good and Jimmie's vocals are fantastic - what needs real work is getting more singing experience for me and for Jimmie and I to get our timing tight. And to memorize all the lyrics. It just takes repetition, I think it's doable. I don't know that I'll ever be consistently on pitch but if I can keep getting better and then you cost average my below average together with Jimmie's way above average... hey, it could be a bargain.
  • John : Yep, the big stage once a year. That ain't cuttin' it. Now, we're lucky to have our every Thursday thing but we're mostly doing that to help everybody. And we play most Sundays but those things are all 30 minutes or so. We need a good healthy, low paying, long and grueling gig in front of strangers to work out our performance. So we can sink or swim each night until we can swim every time.
  • Art : ... you have a steady gig at The Woodzie, right?
  • Art : I hear nothing but good things about you and Jimmie. Seems like there would be plenty of places for a duo to play.
  • John : Jimmie and I didn't get to play music very much this week, we're really missing it. We're looking for a weekly full gig. We need to hone our thing and to do that we need to play for hours at a stretch and not just 20 or 30 minutes. If anybody has any ideas let us know.

  • Sal : sure! I mean what could possibly go wrong?
  • John : she's been napping an hour, should I go in there holding a whip and a chair Siegfried & Roy style and see how the training went?
  • Jimmie : I'm trained. Nap time.
  • John : Jimmie publishes a schedule and my mind is trained on how to keep the trains on the track.
  • Sal : it's a version of that classic line from Watchman - "WHO TRAINS THE TRAINER?"

  • Art : have you experienced some trouble with that, John?
  • John : Jimmie's not at all happy about having to get up early on a Saturday morning and go in for training. Don't they know she's not trainable?
  • John : It rained here yesterday!! Seemed to mark a change in the weather. We had a long streak of days of up around 103 degrees and now we're going to get four or five days around 95. Those 8 degrees make a big difference. Eight degrees of seperation between being able to spend much time outside or not.
  • John : I guess that's true - stand out too long and become a Burnt Up Man.

  • John : a year ago I came within inches of going with David Priest to Burning Man. I really thought then that he and I'd go for sure this year. I suddenly realized it's starting next week. I guess the best I can say again is... next year. «link»

  • John : Back from another fishing trip. You have to make hay while the sun shines. OK... I'm going to settle down now and get caught up on all the stuff I was supposed to be doing this past week.

  • John : Jimmie and I are going to be playing with Al Barlow for his big birthday party at The Phoenix «link» in downtown New Braunfels this afternoon and then, hopefully, with Glenn at Riley's tonight. I've made a commitment to play with Jimmie and she and late nights before early Sunday mornings don't mix. But I'm pretty sure we'll be there tonight. Come on out if you can!

  • John : Jimmie and I are looking forward to playing the Olmos Bharmany tonight. There's music before and after us but we go on from 8:15 to 9:00. Claude Morgan will join us on guitar which will be a treat plus Jim and I had a nice confidence builder at Oma's two nights ago... if you have an interest in hearing 10 originals, they have a sportin' chance of sounding pretty decent tonight. Admission is free and they serve food if you want to make a dinner out of it.

  • John : some of those are the newest and some of those are the oldest of the headers we've made. The dern random header loader is shooting blanks about half the time, I guess I need to get in there and try to troubleshoot it. If it comes up blank or if you just want to see another one, click on the header area and it puts another one up.
  • Steve : I dig the new mastheads!
  • John : I noticed you didn't do it... I'm tellin' ya, go to Facebook and get on the group mailing list. We pretty much use Facebook to do all the TNMC communicating. Join in!!!
  • John : oh yeah, we do it every Thursday without fail. It's regular. Like church. Bring some Bill Miller's brownies for the collection plate.
  • Art : I know you just got back will there be a Thursday Music Club tonight?
  • John : We're home. I absolutely love my sister Renee. And New Mexico. And traveling with my family. But... it's so nice to wake up in your own little bed in your own little house.
  • John : We're in New Mexico and are only getting phone and Internet connections every now and then. Having a great time, a couple of more days and we'll be home.
  • John : well thanks. You made me look and yeah, this past Sunday was the 7th Anniversary of this family and friends website. Most don't last long so in website years that's like being 90.
  • Aston : I have been sampling at random back to 2003 and am amazed you have archives with daily posts back seven years. It represents much effort.
  • John : My sister Renee and I are, I guess, the people who talk about the structure (old and decrepit) and function of the blog the most. We've talked about little sidebar ads but that sounds like work. No, no agenda or motive it's just us chickens.
  • Steve : here's a plug for unsupervised learning. «link» Even back when schools were better, wouldn't you agree that only the tiniest fraction of what we all learned was supervised. And not ANY of the really good stuff.

  • John : Evan's at Matt's with the camera making movies. I didn't ask what of but I'm sure I'm going to find out.
  • John : This week Jimmie and I will be the special musical guests. We have some new songs to air out.

  • John : Jimmie and I are still going strong since 1973. That's 37 years. I remain naïve, she effectively guards the fence line. One reason we've had such a long and successful marriage.
  • Sandra : I know who you're talking about. She walked around playing the recorder? I just remember that you and Janet were the sweetest hippie couple at Roosevelt. The matching elephant bell pants with all the patches. You guys were like the prince and princess of that whole scene. I wish you had called me.
  • John : no, I married Jim. There were things about me my high school friends didn't know.
  • Sandra : so did you marry Janet Brantley?
  • John : that's my Dad who was posting about that. Yeah, those 100' tall high tension electrical distribution towers went just about over our house. Specially when the humidity was high each wire would hum so loud it was like a choir. Even to this day I can light a fluorescent tube just by stepping near it. Nice to hear from you. I'm fine. Married. One kid out of college, one in and one a junior in high school.

  • John : If anybody's been trying to call, our Time Warner modem is acting up. The rain last night caused a power outage and maybe a surge. Internet's been up and down.

  • Art : you got your buddy George W. to thank for the predominance of performance testing. Started in Texas and then went coast to coast.
  • John : yeah but don't they create those TAKS and other tests based on the contents of the textbooks? They teach to those tests, it's almost all they do. Local school districts' funding is tied up in their performance on it.
  • Art : that whole political textbook thing is silly in a way. Ask your kids, classes now are rarely taught by the chapter out of text books. The change away from text books has really already happened. Computers are involved in every subject.
  • John : think of that in context of the recent firestorm of controversy about textbooks. Could a school district or even teachers edit in and out what they wanted? Hmmmm...
  • Art : if the iPad could replace text books in schools think of all the money that would be saved «link»
  • John : first the boys went up to Austin for the early evening and then back through New Braunfels into San Antonio for the 3D iMax midnight premeire of Toy Story 3. I haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, they'll probably sleep until 2. Hope the movie was good.

  • John : That was me, last night... I didn't know Jimmie was logged on. ANYWAY... it flooded along the river really bad up here. And the roads were mostly closed this morning. Evan was spending the night at Matt's who's house is near the Guadalupe and the houses right across the street were under water. But it has receded and everybody here in the family is fine now.

  • John : we're on the same page there Mike. We got her to the doctor right away. He switched her to a much stronger antibiotic and it seems to be knocking it out. She's doing much better and is actually back at work this morning. But it was a tough four days.

  • John : poor Jimmie, she's having her worse swelling today. I reached the doctor at home and got him to switch to a much stronger antibiotic just in case. We're concerned because the swelling is all the way around her eye now. We know not to take the chance of infection lightly. But you should see her, she looks pitiful.

  • John : Jimmie's still hurting pretty bad but doing good. Another day of pampering and I think she'll start getting back to normal. I'm enjoying taking care of her.
  • John : Got Jimmie home. She was in there all morning. The oral surgeon seems to be a really thorough guy and he said he was able to do exactly what needed to be done. That was the problem before, just couldn't do it going from the crown towards the roots had to cut in from the other way. But this should get rid of the nagging tooth pain she's had.
  • John : Jim Bell is having oral surgery this morning. She hates going to the dentist for even minor things and here she is having to have some of the worst kind of dental work. But the boys and I are going to take good care of her this weekend.

  • John : I got up on this beautiful morning after the incredible thunderstorm last night and the trees are full of tens of thousands of something making a huge racket. Sounds like frogs but they're way up in the trees. For as far as you can hear. It's scary loud. What a great storm last night. Rolling Texas thunder for hours. I love it.

  • John : as is their tradition, Evan's best friend Matt is spending the first week of summer with us. Evan, Matt and Taylor turned the living room into a mancave while Jimmie and I were out in Kerrville. At this point I've written the living room off and am just trying to defend the kitchen.
  • John : we're back home now. That was like a vacation, wonderful. As you could see Jimmie tapped her iPad into a little WiFi at Pleasant Valley Ranch. It was slooooow but it was live. Go to Kerrville if you can, it's great. What happens on the main stage is nothing, it all happens at song circles people host in the tent and RV village. It's like a hundred house concerts going on, one at each house in a big subdivision. And you walk from circle to circle. Some of it is awful but a lot of it is brillia

Great to see Becky and Tom, Cassell and Craig, Mitch and Hillary, Jack and the girls, The Taylors... and everybody else. The whole thing was a really nice time. All our kids were there last night. It's particularly important to Jimmie to get this time with her sisters.

  • John : There's going to be a nice Webb family reunion in Austin at Winona's this Saturday. Cassell and Craig will be here from England, Becky and Tom from California and of course Jimmie and I and Mitch and Hillary are here already... Winona is going to have the complete set of all her Aunts and Uncles at her house at one time. We're really looking forward to it.
  • John : Winona is doing such a great job of keeping everybody informed on Rusty's condition via email. The news in each day's update gets better and better. It's amazing that he has survived this far. He's a fighter.

  • John : Jimmie and I are back. Including taking our time and staying relaxed getting down there and back, it was a four day trip. We only stayed one night on the beach. We did a lot of moving around. Went to some nice restaurants. Walked on peirs and jetties. Went to the annual Nautical Fleamarket - we were just lucky to run into that. We met some nice people which seems to happen more when walking the dogs. It felt like a looooong trip for just four days. And we really needed it.

  • Steve : most San Antonians believe the Spurs didn't try hard to win in Dallas so they could close it out at home. I'm not saying what I think except that a WHOLE lot more money was made playing that last game at home.
  • John : I think Mitch has said that he's made money with CD Baby. Why not record your single best song and put it up there? People, and you guys know who you are, who wait two and three and four years between making new records might want to go into the making singles business. And then when you have done 10, burn them on one offs CDs and sell them at shows.

  • Steve : CD Baby has changed their policy and you don't have to have released a complete CD anymore. You can now record one song and submit to them and they will make it available through their service and only charge a one time $9 fee and then 9% of each sale.

  • John : I'm gonna sell them some shrimp.... with a hook in it. And I'm going with Chano from CE Distributors. We're riding together so we'll talk a little business down there and back. I've been fishing for redfish for years now, this will be a trip after big trout. The guide called and said they're out there and that tomorrow would be the day.

Jimmie and I have become devoted to playing together now. We played our songs and sat and visited in what turned out to be the bright sunshine... and each got a crisp new hundred bill. It's not that the money is a big deal, it's just special to us that we got it for playing. It wasn't that different from TNMC. Except the hundred bill part.

  • John : ....a hectic couple of days. Taylor's car broke down and I've been ferrying him back and forth to San Antonio College. He got his first experience hunting car parts down at a junk yard today. He paid $85 for the parts instead of $345 and he was thrilled. Plus we got to race up and down the aisles between the cars in two 4 wheelers. We were chasing the junk yard goats. It was great.

  • Ann/mom : I have to say that this Woodzie was just wonderful. I brought a neighbor, who had a friend in from Boise, Idaho and she says she wants to come back next year. On Monday morning I brought Deirdre back to the Woodzie site to get her car and I was wishing we could do it again! Everything was still so beautiful.

  • John : Mother, you do have those talents you just need to start singing and playing some percussion stuff. I don't know of anybody who has more music in them than you. It's in every cell of your body.
  • Ann/mom : I keep wondering why don't I have any of those talents?
  • Ann/mom : I am trying to figure out how you can go to TNMC and not smile! Just the joy of anticipation and seeing, and meeting other people is enough for me. But then..knowing someone is going to just bowl you over with a song is such a gift. Lawrence harmonizes so beautifully and enjoys it so much. I thnk I live for TNMC, in the sense of looking forward to being with so many wonderful friends and of course family.
  • John : it was so nice to see Tyler having so much fun. Didn't she sound great? Last night's TNMC had it's share of oddities but it was overall very good. Everybody seemed to enjoy singing even more than usual, it wasn't a laid back night... everybody was belting it out.

  • John : Now it's Sunday night. Time is flying. The Susan Gibson songwriting workshop went well. After that Jimmie and I drove all the way to Devine, Texas for Claude Morgan's house warming party. He's been rebuilding that house for years and it's finally done. We saw some interesting people, played a little music and had a great time. Claude said to say hello to everybody and that he'll see ya at The Woodzie this year for sure.

Mother and I were at a funeral this morning; my sister Renee's husband Randy's sister Maureen Grothues. We love all the Grothues. Maureen was very special person who we remember very fondly.

The song didn't leave any impression, just the high wire and dripping water act. That was cool. She should join the circus.

  • Deirdre : All of the mountain cedar in South Texas has just landed in my sinuses in the last hour. And I haven't even gone outside. (We need a head swelling like a balloon emoticon here.)
  • John : thanks! We're heading over to our daughter Casey's new house in San Antonio for this year's Christmas dinner and get together. We've always done it on Christmas Eve. We'll have a big breakfast and do the kids' presents in the morning and then over to Mitch and Hillary's Christmas afternoon. Hope every body has a wonderful, peaceful and relaxing Christmas! Relax, it's CHRISTMAS!

  • DAP : I would also recommend Allergen Block «link» - also known as fake boogers. They help.
  • John : Well... the cedar pollen is starting to release. If you take something for cedar fever, start taking it now. Taylor and I take the over the counter generic Clariton from Wal-Mart. If you get the Equate two 60 count bottle package it's something like 8 cents a pill. If you take it everyday starting now you might cruise through unscathed this season.
  • John : No, we went once and that's enough. If they were to have it at Riley's I'd go.
  • Maria : congratulations on another year of Grammy nominations for Tejas, John. Not just one but two Are you going to go?
  • Steve : glad you're out Big John. don't over do.
  • John : other than the incision, my arm looks normal for the first time in what seems like forever. I have this strange, strong taste of what I guess is the antibiotics. I'm a little unsteady but other than that... I feel pretty good. Thanks everybody for all your kindnesses while I was sick.
  • Jimmie : He's out of surgery and back in his room. Doing great.
  • Kim M : Good luck with the surgery, John. Let us know if we can do anything to help you guys. Hope those bugs give up soon so you can go home.

  • DAP : I know this doesn't help, but OOUUCCHHHHH!!!
  • John : In three hours (Wed. 7:00) I'm having the surgery to clean out the part of the infection that's in my elbow. Looks like I'm going to be here until Friday.
  • John : It's Tuesday night, about 11:45 - I'm sitting in my hospital bed with a computer in my lap. It feels like I've been in this room forever. They took me for a wheelchair ride to x-ray yesterday. I was looking around, so excited, like a dog in the back of a pickup truck. I gotta get outta here. I think I'm gonna make a crawl for it.
  • John : That's the bad news Malcolm, after this I won't be able to play the piano worth a damn. Exactly the same as before.
  • Malcolm : That's terrific news! Now the question remains will you be able to play the piano?
  • John : Taylor just stopped by the hospital to check on me and I've commondeered his laptop for the rest of the day. I'm doing much better. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. I've rounded the corner and will be back on my feet in a day or two.
  • Cara : Sending my prayers and best wishes!
  • Kelli : Oh no!! Just read the news...putting the entire Whipple clan in my prayers. Keep us posted...
  • Casey : mom says dad is stable. they are giving him heavy duty anti-biotics... she will be staying the night with him... she went to wally world to buy some knitting materials so she should be ok too
  • Casey : um he doesn't want any visitors today but if he gets feeling better and he does I will post it.... right now he just wants to get feeling better
  • MF : How long will he stay? Is he getting visitors?
  • Casey : John has been admitted to North East Methodist Hospital. The infection has spread to his hand and he is now being given intervenious anti-biotics. I will post updates. Let's all hope for the best.
  • Jimmie : They weren't able to get anything to drain so, no culture. I marked the outer rim of the red area and it hasn't grown since this afternoon. Also, I think he's feeling better.
  • MF : Methicillin-resi stant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterial infection that is highly resistant to some antibiotics. Staph skin infections cause a red, swollen, and painful area on the skin
