The last time I saw my Uncle Lester was here at my service station!

Johnny’s Texaco was in the entrance of the Fairfield Subdivision at 410 and Starcrest. It was a Saunders and Treshman project.

Mrs. J.R. Saunders Jr. lived at 3742 Highcliff Dr. That is the third street behind my Texaco Station. Her name is on the Wimberley Reunion of 1972 registration list. Does anyone know who she is? I knew that there was a Saunders living back there but I did not know them.

He came in as usual to get his “white Gas” can filled for his lawn mower and garden tiller. Actually I stocked it specially for him and we had many conversations about the use of

Jimmie Looking Up2

Part of the goal of this trip was “artsy photo expedition”. At some points all five of us were walking around shooting. Taylor got the fancy new camera and took far and away the most, then me and Jimmie contributed some good ones. As you may or may not know, Evan and Erica are heavy into photography but only shoot film, I assume, for artistic, ideological and/or political reasons. Means they can only afford to take a smaller, more reasonable number of exposures. Hmm… looking at having to organize all these digital shots maybe their retro thing has it’s merits. I haven’t seen Evan’s yet but Erica’s are genius. I’ll try to put some in the Whippleworld photo gallery as soon as we get settled back into our routine.

I feel so slow this morning!

Virginia’s and Virgil’s Courtship

Virgil and Virginia, 1927 001

My Mom and Dad had what young people today would have a hard time believing: a courtship that lasted from 1924 to 1931. She was almost 15 when they met and he was 17 1/2. Seven years later they married. Mom and Dad dated often, even thought she lived in San Antonia and he in Yoakum, San Marcos, and Austin at various times. They dated a lot with all of Virginia’s brothers and their future wives: Raymond and Peggy, Howard and Alice, some cousins, and visited with Lester and Ester who were already married, and many relatives that lived in Wimberley.

One reason for this post though, is I have a question for anyone who can remember well the house at 505 Rigsby. Mom mentioned in her Diary (where I got all of this information), that she and Dad would sit by the fire in the dining room. Try as I might, I cannot picture a fireplace in the dining room. John Sr., since you lived in that house, where was the fireplace? I am really curious, as I can remember everything else about the house.

Think we found Evan’s Mountain!

Sunrise City of Rocks 2

Jimmie and I took a sleeping bag and slept between the giant boulders at what they call City of Rocks. We had an incredible full moon show all night and then this was the sunrise. Having a good time, wish you were here.

It is hard to believe that Santa Fe, New Mexico has a 4.000 foot higher elevation than the Mile high city Denver Colorado. No wonder people drink out there. It’s a cheap fix! One beer can get you plastered, or one sunset!

Renee is turning 50 this weekend and we’re here to help her celebrate. She’s been dieing to show us her little town for years and she’s right, it’s awesome. First of all it has that invigorating New Mexican dry, cool air. We were down sitting at a table on the sidewalk of the historic area of town drinking coffee at 7:30 this morning and it felt wonderful. Renee and Randy play Gypsy Jazz and we’re off here in minute to hear them at a breakfast gig. After that Evan wants to go climb a mountain so we need to find a really short one. Do they make mountains that are 50 or 60 feet high? Then Renee’s big party starts at 4:00 and there’ll be tent behind the art gallery that Renee uses as a studio and I understand that she’ll have drums and a full band setup for us and all her local musician friends to take turns playing on. Mother and Deirdre got here last night and we all went out to a very nice diner. It’s been a wonderful trip already and we’re just getting started.
