Thanks so much Raymond and Dad for this post and the stories in the comments.

Once the effort is made to get good stuff like this up here, it's here forever. Remember that the way to find it again is to use the search function. Whippleworld is not the couple of posts on the front page, that's the tip of the iceberg. What it is is a big database and that's the way to understand it and to use it. For instance, go to the search box that is a couple of inches below the header in the left column and type in Virgina and hit enter.

That search brings up several pages of posts where her name is mentioned. There's always some none related posts where the name Virginia just happens to be there but all related ones will be there.

Try it and try some other topics. Saunders. Wimberley. Gini. Williamson. Henry Whipple. Medina Lake. Anything or anybody. And it's totally cool to leave a comment on a really old post; when people see a new comment in the sidebar that click on it and it takes them back to that post.

If you try a search for subject that should be here but it's not it means you should stop and take a minute to add it. :)

Probably So.

But, at least we found that Virginia Lee was all right! The Lake was down but, that only just made swimming alone more of a danger.

All is well that ends well!

Why did Daniel make us do it?

I guess we could keep this up forever. Our parents, my mom especially, would turn over in her grave at your suggestion! I still remember how upset she was, and to a lesser degree, the others, when they found us in the middle of the lake on our way back from the other side. What an adventure! (I think it was your idea, though).

John, thanks for the music selections. The Victrola recording brought back many happy memories just listening to songs like "The Wreck of the Old 99" and the Vaudeville record with the song which is now very politically incorrect if not downright racist, which had the lyric which went: "You smells just like a rose...etc." I won't finish it!

I too remember the room underneath the stair. I was suprised one time to see that it existed at all. I also remember that I was afraid to go up the stairs alone after it got dark. I was a real little kid in those days!

Precious trivia. The only thing left is our memories. I remember that big table. I don't know what ever happened to it. It had 3 extra leaves that made it gigantic. Also the big wood desk up in Uncle Lester's room (turn left at the top of the stairs.) It was made by a relative out of scrap raw wood and had a big typewriter folded up in it. I heard the story about it several times but don't know who it was that made it but I think I remember that it had made it to Oklahoma and back.
I just realized that probably the reason for doing the repair in scrap apple crate wood is it must have been damage from that train wreck.

Underneath the stair well was my favorite place. Granny Sabra treated me to those never thrown away toys. Always cookies and a slice of forever fruit cake!

I remember playing in the parlor with you. The Thomas Edison windup Victrola and Uprightl piano that had several ivory key caps off. I think it was a Kimball upright. Let me Google that!

John, thanks for the information. I will try to do the things you suggested. I use Picasa 3 for my photos, as it is very user friendly. I use Internet Explorer for my browser. It is amazing how people who grew up with computers just seem to know automatically what to do, no matter their age!

I remember most of the things you described about the dining room. it was a great room. My favorite piece of furniture was the large round table under the Tiffany lamp. I remember well the sliding doors, although they were almost always hidden in the wall. Although not in the dining room, but on the back porch, I will never forget the ice box and the real ice block that kept it cold. The ice man still was delivering ice at that time in the 1940's. Quite a novelty for us little kids!

my answer to your picture elongation question is when I went into your post code I saw your picture was way over "width" and I cut it back to 400 pixels. I got the picture in there but your Firefox browser should have done that for you in the new versions it's all automatic now especially if you are using photoshop to create your picture file.

When you are setting up your post it will ask you your pixel limit and what file code you want. You may try "300" on all of them as I do unless you are doing a special project and let your settings do all the work for you. I have not needed to change it in a year or so. I don't know what software or operating system you are using.

Most all of them work ok now as long as you save as .JPG

My browser is Firefox version 3.3.0
and I use adobe photo shop (latest) you can update free. and when everything goes wrong I call my son "Leslie" as I do! He diffidently knows more of this "new age" stuff! I know a lot of old age stuff and no one calls me for it! I'm out dated!

but, I get by.

Dear Ray,
My answer to your question is the fireplace was in the dining room along the inner West wall that separated it from the kitchen. There was a swinging door on each side of the fireplace going back into the kitchen. The one on the left was closed off in the 1954 renovation my Mother and Father did to that side of the kitchen.

The high double oven stove backed up to it from the kitchen side. The Fireplace had a beautiful dark wood mantle supported by two matching wood columns that matched the wood plate rail that went all around the dining room wall. There were two wooden sliding doors in to the wall that allowed the closing off the front entrance room that was connected to the parlor. One of those doors kept coming off the rail in the wall so they were not used much.

A large stained glass Tiffany lamp hung over the table in the center of the dining room. A brown tiled hearth and a open mantled Heatilater sat in the fireplace opening.
There was a beveled mirror just above the fireplace and an oval front door glass and two beveled side glass windows made the place look very elegant and the translucent effect gave the front room privacy.

The fireplace may have been used for firewood heat in the early days. but, I never saw any burned there. I think the foundation may have shifted making it no longer practical to do it safely.

There was really no practical "no kiss" zones. . . .oops!
