Lynne Allan took this photo of an Indian motorcycle that somebody rode to this event we played at in Hunter yesterday. It was really beautiful in person.
Sitting on a table inside Hal King’s garage was a Lea Francis Offenhauser engine. I was told it had run in the 1948 Indy 500 and had lost by only seconds and threw a connecting rod through the side of the block and was given to Hal King Sr.for a possible repair which he had done with a plate machined and bolted to the block. The Hal King Jr. story had it that his Dad was going to run in the 1950 Indy 500 with a home brew supercharger made from a positive displacement twin rotary pump that had been used for the deicing of the wings of a large airplane.
I knew nothing about all the goings ons at that time, but, my interest was dream worthy and it set me up for figuring out and solving a number of racing and automotive problems and with answers that has changed the automobile in the last 60 years. When you went to the store the merchant used a small hand held white, yellow page and pink page receipt book with 2 carbon papers you would get ready for the next sale. The sales person kept the original, the customer got the yellow and the pink went to the bookkeeper, All receipts were hand written in pencil. Ball point pens were not improved for practical use until 1949 and they are still having problems!
Sales Tax did not begin until 1955 in Texas and was 2 cents on the dollar. It was
