This is the back.

“The house is a memorial to Henry M. Whipple. The flag that draped Henry’s casket when we received it from France June 20, 1920. Virgil took this picture July 4th 1940. This flag has hung from this balcony on 4 July and Armistice Day every year for 20 years. The children are Virginia’s little boys Daniel and Raymond. The dog is Tuck (?)’s dog.”

Here’s the front…

Tuck is uncle Howard’s fox terrier who could do a number of tricks–roll over, play dead, sit up, beg, “clean his plate”, etc. It is my understanding there had been a duo, the name of the other dog was “Nip”.

That’s great, Charlie. So it reads “The dog is Tuck, Howard’s dog.”. I think the rest of it is correct, if anybody else reads that part “when we received it” differently please say. That’s the only part that doesn’t quite make sense. Henry is buried in France so did they receive a flag draped casket? I imagine Sabra just received the flag.

I have to spell some of it out so my kids can catch who’s who. The note was written by Sabra Whipple, your great, great grandmother.

Henry is buried at the cemetary in San Marcos alongside other members of the family. They received the body in a casket. It was probably sealed. I remember grandmother Sabra saying she was never sure that it was Henry’s body in the casket.

That’s right, I’ve seen the marker. I was thinking of the photo from France that shows the cross.

OK, then that’s right. It’s so helpful when things are written on the back of a photo, I’m glad she told that piece of story there, too.
