I’m tellin’ you, that sky is a long way off!
…..too late.
this was a couple of days ago right above the damn on the Guadalupe River in the Kerrville city park. Because it’s damned the level in this spot hasn’t really dropped, it’s one of the last really good swimming holes left by the drought of 2011. Almost all the other creeks and rivers up there are as dry as a bone.

Where is that pool of sky? I want to jump in too!

We always call it the city park but I see they actually have a “City Park” and that ain’t it. It’s Kerrvile-Schreiner Park. Here’s the official PDF of the campsites and trails.

This has been a favorite spot of ours since the 70′s. It used to be a part of the State Park system but they turned it over to the city. It seems to me that it’s really underused, I can’t remember the last time I saw it crowded. We drive out there from the Folk Festival every day we’re there, often twice. Sometimes thrice. We were there this past weekend four or five times and on Labor Day Weekend we had it almost totally to ourselves. There may be better but this would be a great place to have a family and friends campout one year. What Jim and I did in the 70′s and 80′s was to camp here at night and be at the festival just for the shows. Now we do the opposite.

Love that park. I’ve never seen it crowded, either, but thought I was just getting lucky. Swimming there during the day is the secret to surviving the heat during Kerrville.

we used to look into the campgrounds at the festival and think all those people were crazy…. why in the hell would you camp on the rocks in the hot dust (or mud) when you could camp right ON the river for free in comparative luxury just 10 minutes up the road.
I didn’t understand that it was really a huge meeting of musician friends from around the world. Who are, in fact, mostly crazy but not for the reason I was thinking.
