Looks like late 1800′s or very early 1900′s to me, maybe we could ID him with the help of Quakertown Online. If you look through their photos towards the bottom here there are quite a few Whipples.

I’ve taken a look at the photo (and, by the way, also looked at the great post about Jonathan and Zerah Whipple), but I don’t recognize the person in the photo. Because of the fact that the photo was shot outside and in an informal situation, I would say that your guess that it was taken ca. 1890-1910 is right on the mark. But this precludes its being of either of Orva’s grandfathers, both of whom would have been long dead by then. If it is a relative, perhaps it is an uncle or cousin. If there were a stone wall behind the person instead of a wooden fence, that would certainly suggest a Connecticut location. I wish I could be more help. Keep in touch.
