Look where I’ve been.

Thank you so much Maggie and Tunji for the dinner treat and showing my tutor and I around where we stayed. Our stay wouldn’t have been such a pleasant one without your help.

It’s really nice to have met them in Hong Kong. Thanks John too, for inviting me to be a part of such a big blog full of friendly and loving people.

Well, looking forward to seeing you guys in Singapore/Malaysia soon!

that would likely make the host unhappy).

If you can see this. That means this test is successful.

FYI, the image is sent as an attachment. So probably you can use this
feature for emailing of photos taken directly from a mobile phone.

A good thing about this is that, you don’t have to worry that the
picture size might destroy the layout. The engine will automatically
resize the picture to fit the layout and user can click on the resized
picture to view the full sized one.

Hi all,

I’ve just done an update on Whippleworld. If the page appear somewhat broken to you, please do a hard refresh by hitting Ctrl+F5.

Various things in this update:
1. 4 columns! I’ve adjusted the width of the columns. I have made the right most column the widest for shoutbox and radio.

2. We now get to know who posted a particular entry.

3. List of members.

4. Installation of the shoutbox.
- It’s done with AJAX! That means it will self syncronise with the server without the need of a refresh! I just love AJAX. Thanks to the plugin writer.

5. Upgrade of WordPress core from version 1.5.1.2 to 1.5.1.3.

I’ve just put up the layout for the new Whippleworld. It is currently hosted on my server.

I put it up so we all will be able to see the progress of the develop and be involved in it at the same time.

After playing around with Xoops for a few days, I figured out that it is not quite suitable to be used as a blog. So after some thoughts trying to figure out which blogging engine to use, I decided on WordPress. I hope you guys are fine with it. I believe its interface (backend) is more user-friendly than Xoops’ and its blog features would be far more superior than that of Xoops.

I hope the banner which shows the city skyline is the correct skyline which most of you reside in. I googled for a good 30 minutes trying to find a good picture to use for Whippleworld’s banner. Then I found out John’s company’s address and I assume that most of you are based in San Antonio. So I made the banner with San Antonio’s skyline photo I got from Wikipedia.

The current Flikr sidebar deliver random photos on Flickr. John, could you please make a Flickr badge for Whippleworld and email me the code so I could replace the code to show pictures from the members of Whippleworld.

I would email John later the site’s username and password so you guys can have a try on the system. You can try to post a few entries just for test. Please keep in mind that as I’m still developing the system. I might overwrite the database during the process and the posts might get lost. But if you just want to play with it. Feel free to do so.

With the layout up, our project hasn’t come to the end yet, but it is in fact just started. If the layout’s fine, I can now start concentrating on developing the features that you guys have requested and hopefully could make them available as WordPress plugin to benefit other WordPress users as well, as John intended.

Hello to the Whipple-worlders. If you’re surprise to find my post here, I’m actually invited by John into your family blog about a month ago and I haven’t got about to post anything here despite the various times of John asking me to post something here.

Well, I guess all of you are aware that John has asked me to create a better multi-user family-oriented blog for Whippleworld. I am very delighted to find that so many of you are so excited about this project and have given so many constructive suggestions on what to implement for the next blog. I find a lot of suggestions very good. I would try my very best to implement each one of them. In any case if it is unable to do so, I would let you guys know about it and maybe we can all suggest a workaround for that particular case.

Just so you know what’s on the menu of the new blog design project:

1. Migration of Blog
- Migrate your blog to Xoops (hosted on your own host)
- Create/customise a template suitable for your family oriented blog
- Migrate your existing posts frmo whippleworld.com to the new Xoops-based blog

2. Photo-Sharing
- Integration of Flickr into Xoops blog.

3. Audio blog
- Installation of Radio.Blog on your new host
- Integrate Radio.Blog into your new blog

4. Multi-User Expansion
- Coding (or modification) of a Xoops module that would enhance the multi-userability of your blog with the ability to view the time each users last logged in to view the blog

5. Add/Remove Links Functionality
- Creation of sidebar of interesting links.
- Members would be able to add/remove links from the sidebar freely.

6. Search Functionality
- Integration of a search functioanlity into the blog

7. Last Comments Functionality
- Creation of a sidebar that lists the recent comments of the blog.

(New additional features compiled from various suggestions from Whippleworlders!)

8. Email Posting Support
- which includes support of file attachments (especially pictures)
- if the attachment being pictures, it would be posted inline
- else it would be posted with a link pointed to it.

9. Images would auto resize to a maximum width to prevent breaking of layout

- This one I can’t really promise anything now but I would definitely try my best to implement it. I’ll have to look into Xoops database management and see how I could temper with it to come up with the hack.
- I’ll concentrate on other features of the blog for the mean time. When it’s mostly done. I would then work on this feature.

14. Lockable blog entries
- to prevent non-whipple worlders from reading, but members of whippleworld who are logged in would be able to read it.

I would build the blog top-down, basically I would build the skeleton first, get the layout right, and then build each module separately (that’s the greatness of Xoops!). I would post updates as I go along.

My estimated timeline is that this whole project would take about a month to complete. I can’t afford to drag it much longer too, my school would be reopening soon.

For your information, during the time of development, I would host the blog on my server as John hasn’t managed to get Chris to set up his server properly.
