Once,
Many years ago one sunny day far out at sea
Our ship on course for a distant Asian land
A rain squall dark, foreboding lay dead ahead
And there appeared a mighty rainbow
At least a hundred stories high
A glowing band of reds, and greens, and golds
Its shimmering legs spread seductively
A mile apart dancing on the waves
A celestial gateway to paradise?
Hooray! we thought with glee
We are going to sail right under this colored span
And see what it looks like beneath
And perhaps t’other side
But alas! The closer we came the more it shrank
Till it was barely large enough to pass on through
Then, as the ship’s bow nosed into it
It became a luminated cloud of sparkling gems
A brilliant trove spilled from some pirate’s swag
Of diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, topaz
But these precious stones were water droplets all
Then it was gone and we sailed on.
That was many years ago.
Now I am landlocked far from shore,
But the memory never dims
Of the bright sunny day far out at sea
When my shipmates and me
Sailed into a rainbow
While we were bound for Singapore.

My good friend Pam Maltsberger is helping research our family history. She took this letter written to Sabra which was in longhand and nearly impossible to read and transcribed it into a Word document. Thanks Pam!!

For any who don’t know, Sabra and Orva are my Dad’s paternal Grandparents. This starts as a condolence letter after Orva’s death. The house Clara compliments is the house at 505 Rigsby in San Antonio which was the hub of our part of the Whipple family up until 1962. In ’62 my grandparents, who the house had passed down to, sold it and moved the hub to New Braunfels above the island.

I find the letter very fascinating. Hope you do, too. You’ll read how she’s asking for Raymond to come visit her. I know that Granny, Grandad, Ray and Bill took a trip to visit Clara at her house in Philadelphia, I think in the mid-50′s around the time I was born, and it was a wonderful thing for all of them. We can visit Cousin Clara through her letter.

TRANSCRIPTION OF LETTER

FROM: MRS. JOHN G. MCGUIGAN (?)
6018 DREXEL RD. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

TO: MRS. SABRA WHIPPLE
505 RIGSBY AVE. SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

WRITTEN: DECEMBER 3, 1931
POSTMARKED: DECEMBER 7, 1931

(WRITTEN ON STATIONERY FROM THE BELLEVUE STRATFORD HOTEL, PHILADELPHIA)

Dear cousin Sabra:

I have been planning to write you for cousin Ernest sent me word of Cousin Orva’s death. It was certainly hard on your to be away at the time and it is you who will feel the loneliness now. Didn’t you finally fix your house to rent part of it? Who was with Orva while you were away. Orva was such a gentleman. He was blessed in wife and children and I am so thankful the opportunity came for me to know you all. If my husband hadn’t seen the notice of the Federation meeting at San Antonio in the paper most likely I might never have known you only by letter. I had known a long time the Federation meeting was to be there but it never occurred to me I could go. When my husband found it was to be there he insisted upon me going if they made me a delegate. This they did. Of course they paid none of my expenses but I got reduced rates and planned my trip to see as many of my kin folks as possible. I live over and over the good times I had meeting and knowing my relatives many of whom I had never dreamed of ever seeing. Now when you write and tell me about anything it is all a vivid picture in my mind. I am glad Virginia is so happily married. She was a dear child. Tell me what Raymond is doing and please give me his address.

I have a cousin, a Hammond cousin, who is in Jacobsburg, Ohio. She graduated as a trained nurse here but finds she needs the High School education before some positions are open to her. So she is going to High School with the kids in Ohio expecting to get her diploma there in June. She isn’t young but her mother died when she was a baby and her step mother saw no necessity of an education. She motored up to Cleveland not long ago (she has a car) and she is liable to motor here some time on her trunk and many things are here. I have written her about Raymond and told her I wanted to know if she planned to motor out here any time for possibly Raymond could get away at the time and come with her. I should like to have him come to Phila and make us a visit and see our city etc. So please send me his address.

What is Virginia’s husband’s business? I wish Mary would look up her cousins in California. Clara and her family are nearly related on both sides. Her name was Whipple before marriage but now she is Mrs. Hardy Hutchinson 21 Lake View Ave, Piedmont, Cal. Clara is a lovely woman. She has a married son, a married daughter and an unmarried daughter. Piedmont is a suburb of Oakland.

I am wondering what you will do now. You have such a pretty house you will hate to give it up and yet you will not want to live alone. I sympathize much with you.

I am busy as usual with my various club activities etc. I have one little boy home. I help him evenings with his lessons. The other boy is at boarding school. Monday I spent the whole day in school with Frank to see how he was doing. Tues I went to a poetry class to which I belong and then to the Historical Society to work on supplemental claims papers of Colonial Dames. Wed I had to preside at the New Century Club in the absence of the President who was dining that day at the state capital with the Governor and his wife. I am first Vice President. I got along very well.

Today I went to the City Federation Meeting where the Presidents of various clubs meet once a month. Then to the Russian Tea Room for lunch as guest of a friend. 3 other guests were there. It was an interesting place. We tried Russian food which was right good. They use lots of cabbage and sour cream. This afternoon I played contract bridge at my club. I don’t know much about contract but find most of the other ladies are in the same boat so it will be a good time to learn. We have an expert to manage it and we will probably know something about it at the end of the season.

Tomorrow I shall be home and let the man go out. I shall make up a lot of sand tarts. I am glad you all like those I sent you.

I suppose our section of the country is not alone suffering from financial worries. The depression is dreadful here. 250 ooo people out of work, banks closing, all sorts of business failures, no one paying hardly. I never knew anyting like it. We are economizing in every possible way for we are practically living on cash my husband takes in from day to day. No interest, no rents, no standing bills can be collected now.
If your boys ever want to join the Sons of the Revolution or your girls the Daughters I can give them the necessary data. I will try and send out family record each time I write and if you get a blank book and copy them after awhile you will have a pretty full record.

It was such a joy to know you all. I wish you lived nearer so personal contact could come oftener than once or twice maybe in a life time.

We are having Friday a rainy day today and I wanted to sew on a new velvet eve gown I am having. That sounds extravagant and personally I think it was but my husband was to blame. I hadn’t had a new evening gown in several years so bought a pink satin – very reasonably which I thought would do but my husband’s heart was set on a velvet . Coming home from in town one day he informed me he had had a patient come into his office and pay a bill he never expected to collect with interest and he was going to buy that velvet dress. The silk store where it was bought has a new arrangement. They cut fit and baste for 3.50 a velvet dress so it is all ready for me to stitch. I suppose this is a new arrangement ot give people work. Anyhow it seems to be a very nice arrangement.

I will include the Bolles line in this letter. It is a very nice line. There have been many fine people of that name and there still are.

Bolles
I. Joseph Bolles b Feb 1608 d at Wells, Main in Fall of 1678
In Pope’s Pioneers of Maine we find Joseph Bolles, gentleman, Wills, testified before Maine court in 1640.
His land at Cape Porpoise, Me. Adjoined that of Morgan Howells in 1648.
He subscribed to oat of allegiance to the Mass. Government July 4, 1653. Was clerk of the writs. Sold land in 1659. Will dated Sep 18, probably Nov 29, 1678 legacy to wife Mary – son Thomas, Samuel and Joseph – daughter Frost, Becke, Locke, Chadbourne and Mercy Bolles.
The record of marriage license of Nicholas Frost to Mary Bollen of Mokleigh gent. Taken with foregoing statements and bequests of Morgan Howell may point to Monkleigh, Devonshire, Eng as home of this family, but references in article of Wm S. Appleton (Register 52 p. 185) to the will of John Bolles of Clerkenwell, Middlesex Co., England in 1665 bequeathing to my brother Joseph Bolles living in New England. Mr. Appleton connects them with the Bolles family of Osberton, Northamptonshire, Eng.

(Following written on stationery from William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh)

4
Bolles continued
From New England Family History Vol 1, pp 90,91 Joseph Bolles was at Winter Harbor, Maine in 1640. Moved to Wells, Me. Was town clerk 1654-1664. Was Ensign 1653. He married Mary Howell daughter of Morgan Howell who owned land at Cape Porpoise, Me. Mary was born March, 1724

Howell
From Pope’s Pioneers of Maine p. 103
Morgan Howell, planter settled at Cape Porpoise. Had Lawsuit in court Mar 6, 1838-7. Bought 100 acres of alnd July 18, 1643. Took oat of allegiance to Mass. Government July 5, 1653 (Maine once belonged to Mass)
Will dated Nov 17, 1666 probated Apr 1, 1667 (From change of Old style to New Style). Bequests to Mrs. Mary Bolles & her children & Mary Frost son and Mary Frost Jr.
-	- – - – -
The pedigree of John Boles in the male line is traceable to the time of the Conqueror. The name is on the Roll of Battle Abbey. They were an ancient family of the English gentry, Nottinghamshire. Joseph who emigrated to Maine previous to 1640 by death of his two elder brothers became heir to the famiy estates in England.

II. Thomas Bolles, oldest son, born Dec 1, 1644 moved to New London, Conn, married Zipporah Wheeler of Stonington Conn July 1, 1669 (Some authorities give her name as Mary but no one gives the names of her parents)
They had 3 children, Mary, Joseph, John. The two oldest children and the moter were murdered June 6, 1678 by John Stoddard who was tried by the Court of Assistants at Hartford, Conn, condemned to death and hung at Hartford oct 9, 1678.
He entered the house while the father was away and demanded food or something and when his demands were not immediately complied with seized an axe and killed the mother and two children. He apparently did not see the baby in the cradle and it escaped.

III. John Bolles born Aug 1677, died Jan 7, 1767 m 1st Sarah Edgecomb born July 3, 1689 dau of John Edgecomb. M 2nd (marriage published May 16, 1736. See Joshua Hempstead Diary p. 303) Elizabeth Wood b Nov 9, 1702 d. March 1, 1777 (New Lond Records Vol 2 page 5). Wood daughter of John Wood of Groton at her father’s house in Groton was marryed by me, Joshua Hempstead, Justice of the Peace.
Wood and Chappell
Elizabeth Wood was daughter of John Wood and Mary Chappell b. Feb 14, 1668/9 Mary Chapell was daughter of William Chapell who died 1689 or 90 and wife Christian _____

-	- –
The only children of John Bolles and Eliabeth Wood of whom I now have a record are Zipporah Bolles born Oct 6, 1771 married Whipple (She must have been a grandchild) Christiana Bolles who married William Crouch
John Bolles had other children for Christiana Bolles was his twelfth child and the second child of his second wife Elizabeth. I knew a John Bolles, one of his descendants, but the only child I know the name of is Christiana who was name, you see after her grandmother, and my grandmother Christian, was named for her.

Many people seem to evaluate their last few minutes of life holds some clue as to where they are or have gone. Is there a connection? When they cease to be. Will they always be listening for a clue. Will the information they are seeking come in a dream or precious state of special memory of truth and trust!

brought to view by family members with first hand information may enlighten facts your prospective knowledge about yourself and family members never brought to the surface till someone’s truthful memory helped bring it there.

Remember the unity of truth is what we need to communicate and live, well and long and establish a lifetime of love, trust and happiness with real self worth and natural creativity that no one can deny. As you travel through these Christian based life experiences that may need some repair, prayer and understanding and forgiveness that may help you govern your own life better in this important part you have left. As you get closer to the end you will understand and see what I mean. Some of us “get it” in the very beginning and the rest are waiting for the free speech we were promised in the very beginning.

“Reflections on Pearl Harbor” by Admiral Chester Nimitz.

Sunday, December 7th, 1941–Admiral Chester Nimitz was attending a concert in Washington DC. He was paged and told there was a phone call for him. When he answered the phone, it was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on the phone. He told Admiral Nimitz that he (Nimitz) would now be the Commander of the Pacific Fleet. Admiral Nimitz flew to Hawaii to assume command of the Pacific Fleet. He landed at Pearl Harbor on Christmas Eve, 1941. There was such a spirit of despair, dejection and defeat–you would have thought the Japanese had already won the war. On Christmas Day, 1941, Adm. Nimitz was given a boat tour of the destruction wrought on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Big sunken battleships and navy vessels cluttered the waters everywhere you looked.

As the tour boat returned to dock, the young helmsman of the boat asked, “Well Admiral, what do you think after seeing all this destruction?” Admiral Nimitz’s reply shocked everyone within the sound of his voice. Admiral Nimitz said, “The Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could ever make, or God was taking care of America. Which do you think it was?” Shocked and surprised, the young helmsman asked, “What do mean by saying the Japanese made the three biggest mistakes an attack force ever made?” Nimitz explained:

Mistake number one: the Japanese attacked on Sunday morning. Nine out of every ten crewmen of those ships were ashore on leave. If those same ships had been lured to sea and been sunk–we would have lost 38,000 men instead of 3,800.

Mistake number two: when the Japanese saw all those battleships lined in a row, they got so carried away sinking those battleships, they never once bombed our dry docks opposite those ships. If they had destroyed our dry docks, we would have had to tow every one of those ships to America to be repaired. As it is now, the ships are in shallow water and can be raised. One tug can pull them over to the dry docks, and we can have them repaired and at sea by the time we could have towed them to America. And I already have crews ashore anxious to man those ships.

Mistake number three: every drop of fuel in the Pacific theater of war is in top of the ground storage tanks five miles away over that hill. One attack plane could have strafed those tanks and destroyed our fuel supply. That’s why I say the Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could make or God was taking care of America.

I’ve never forgotten what I read in that little book. It is still an inspiration as I reflect upon it. In jest, I might suggest that because Admiral Nimitz was a Texan, born and raised in Fredricksburg, Texas. He was a born optimist. But any way you look at it, Admiral Nimitz was able to see a silver lining in a situation and circumstance where everyone else saw only despair and defeatism. President Roosevelt had chosen the right man for the right job. We desperately needed a leader that could see silver linings in the midst of the clouds of dejection, despair and defeat. There is a reason that our national motto is, IN GOD WE TRUST.

She would be 102 and be a centenarian. Now which would I rather have her be,a centenarian or be in Heaven?

I think I know where she is! She is in my thoughts and in my memories and in my prayers.

A centenarian is a person who is or lives beyond the age of 100 years. Because current average life expectancies across the world are less than 100, the term is invariably associated with longevity. Much rarer, a supercentenarian is a person who has lived to the age of 110 or more, something only achieved by about one in a thousand centenarians. Even rarer is a person who has lived to 115 years old; only 1 in 50,000 centenarians make it to this age

Hugging the Wrong Trees

It is axiomatic that the more beautiful a place, the more people it attracts, thereby ruining the beauty of the place. Is this the case for the Yosemite Valley in California?

Years ago while living in the San Francisco Bay area, I went camping every chance I had in the Yosemite Valley. It was a camping paradise. There were spectacular views of geological wonders including Half Dome, Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, the El Capitan granite monolith, open meadows, oak and pine trees with the Merced river flowing through the length of the valley floor.

I moved back to Texas and did not get back to Yosemite until 40 years had gone by. When I did, I was shocked! But, it was not the crowds of people. IT WAS THE TREES!

The Park Service had diligently protected the conifers from fire and disease. Pines and firs had grown to the point where spectacular views had been obscured. They had encroached on the meadows. Oak trees, which the Yosemite Indians had depended upon for acorns as a food source had been crowded out.

I thought at first that my memory was deceiving me. I asked a park ranger. He said, “No, it is true. In the past, one could ride a horse at full gallop the seven mile length of the valley and not get brushed by a tree branch”.

In fact, early photographs bear this out. A photo taken from Glacier Point in the mid 1800’s, shows the valley floor and surrounding slopes having only scattered trees. It is believed the Yosemite Indians maintained oaks for the acorn crop and burned off the conifers. It is estimated that two thirds of the meadows have been lost to conifers.

A few months after this visit, I received a letter from an environmental organization requesting a donation to help them offset the impact of the thousands of visitors to the park. I wrote back the major impact was not the visitors but the conifers overrunning the park. I suggested logging out the offending trees and the sale of the lumber would far outweigh any pittance I could contribute. Needless to say, I never heard back from them.

A couple of years have gone by and to my surprise and pleasure the National Park Service seems to agree with me! The Los Angeles Times and several web sites have come forth with the news that plans are in the works, starting in 2012, to start cutting down conifers in selected areas of the valley to once again open up the vistas that have been lost..

I recognize many will be against the cutting down of any trees. The question is, what is important. Is it a matter of maintaining a “pristine wilderness”. Is it a matter of what is the “climax vegetation” of the valley that must be achieved? Is it a matter of maintaining the appearance of the Valley as it appeared when President Lincoln declared it a national park?

“Climax vegetation” is the collection of plant types that establish themselves at any given site over a long period of time if left undisturbed. If a collection of conifer types should be considered the “climax vegetation” of the Yosemite Valley it would have been periodically destroyed by naturally occurring forest fires. If not naturally, then definitely by the Yosemite Indians. I don’t know if anyone really knows what the climax vegetation may have been before the Indians.

In any event, the dominant beauty of the valley is the geological features produced during the ice age by the glacier that carved out the valley creating the spectacular waterfalls and stone monoliths. .In this case, it is not the hoards of people that are ruining the beauty of Yosemite Vally, it is the hoards of trees that have cut off the beautiful views from the hoards of people. .

P.S. I admit the hoards of people are a problem, too, insofar as getting around in the valley because of the traffic. It is probably a good idea to go in the spring when it is warm enough for snow water to be cascading over the falls and before California schools have let out for the summer. Winter is not bad either if you don’t mind freezing and don’t care to drive to the Mariposa Grove of the giant sequoias as the road will be snowed in.

P.P.S. Merry Christmas to all the Whipples and friends.

I can remember every one of them. Some tougher than others but all had the same ingredient “respect and honesty” required to honor thy Father and mother. agreeing with them was not required nor does it say so in the Bible.

We borrowed money from each other on numerous occasions and I can proudly say he paid me back and I paid him back. My mother was a different situation. She required me to pay back things I did not owe which later explained that all gifts were to be hand-me-downs to my siblings. They were all paid in full anyway.

We should be able to own all goods which we acquire by our own creativity and not to expect “something for nothing.”

OK folks… tonight’s obviously the first Thurs. of the month so in an orderly manner please make your way over to Big Bob’s at 7:00 for your biweekly dose of Thursday Night Music Club. The address is 447 Hildebrand.

We believe the weather is going to be warm enough at latitude San Pedro, longitude Hildebrand to be outside on the bandstand.

I hope others do, too but I for one have a new tune to debut and am itching to play it for you. After hearing it you may wonder if that itch may be associated with an STD. I don’t think so but I would bring ear condoms for your personal protection.

PLEASE stop in and visit and play with us, this may be the last nice weather outside meeting of the year.
